Newbie into scanners

Post by Sawit » Mon Jul 04, 2022 6:54 pm

Hello !

Newbie here, recently I became interested in military communication, seeing that it was possible through radio scanners...

That's why I come here to ask experienced and curious people about the subject, which would be the best cost-effective scanner for beginners.

I don't know how the scanner's range works, the closest airbase to me is Beja ~65km (~40 miles)

I'm from Portugal, I don't know if there are people who do it as a hobby in groups or forums.

The only frequencies I know are:
132.150 - SANTA MARIA RADAR
139,050 - A/A
140,500 - A/A
241,875 - A/A
339,550 - A/A
377,100 - A/A
387,275 - A/A

I don't know if they are correct...

Thank you !

Its not just range how far you are away, make sure your scanner is able to pick up that current frequency range too

Hi Sawit :P

The go-to scanner for most people seems to be the Uniden Bearcat UBC125XLT

It’s reasonably priced, covers all the military and civil air bands and is fairly easy to programme :thumb:

Maybe think about investing in a separate aerial instead of the supplied ‘rubber duck’ one as well, for better sensitivity :)

Happy listening ;)

Is there any alternative to the Uniden Bearcat UBC125XLT just to compare?
Cheers

There's loads of alternatives, just not in the same price range...

are there any "cheap" alternatives to the UBC125XLT which can pick up uhf and vhf? or is it the best value for money you can get?

You’d be very unlikely to find a better, better-made or more capable scanner than the 125 for that price, imho :thumb:

The 125 is the cheap option but good value.
