Serial numbers???????
Serial numbers???????
Hi
I saw a post yesterday asking to do a log of movements at RAF lakenheath which I would have quite liked 2 do, but I am pretty confused as what to write down. I've seen a few logs which state a serial number and what squadron etc. Would somebody please help me as to where I can find what squadron the aircraft are in accordance with the serial number??
Also, on the tornados at marham I can't seem to find a serial number at all??
Some help would be much appreciated thanks. Kev.

Re: Serial numbers???????
Hi kev,
just to put your mind at rest, logs can be as intense or as vague as you want them to be. You can either just list what aircraft have flown or (if you have a scanner) put the callsigns up as well. I used to only write down the flyers (at coningsby) but now cross reference that with the callsigns heard (you soon get used to watching them flying around and matching them up).
Don't be too bothered about the units especially with tornadoes as the fleet is generally pooled. You can actually tell which unit is flying a particular airframe from the callsign used (again, i know coningsby's as that's my main base for spotting).
Also, if there is a flightline, you can also list what's 'on the ground' for people to look at. It really is up to you!
Main thing is, whatever gets posted is usually appreciated by most of us on here.
ps - if you want any ideas of what to write, just go onto the coningsby section and look at some of my (captain scarlet) or polecat29sqn logs for ideas.

Re: Serial numbers???????
The serial on a Tornado GR4 is on the fuselage - just behind the wing and the code is at the top of the tail :-

I hope that helps.

Re: Serial numbers???????
Also for Tonka's try BMAL http://www.bmal.org.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; once you have got yourself logged in and find your way around the data base its a great tool for tracking down those Tonka tail codes, generaly they go from 001 to 135, which corresponds with the oldest(001) to youngest(135), with a few exceptions, mostly the 41 Sqn birds which carry 41s old WW2 markings (EB-G for example), but 41 Sqn birds are easy to spot mostly because of the multi-colour grey panels, EB-R for example has 12 different shades of grey!!

Re: Serial numbers???????
Youngest Tonka is 139 (it's in 12 Sqn HAS site in bits)
EDIT: Also (not sure about Marham) at Lossiemouth if a Tornado is using a Lossie callsign it can be a nip, but watch which Pan/HAS site it appears from. Gernerally Lossie 01 is the Station Commander, can't remember what Lossie 02/03 are (Sqn Boss?).
Also XV Sqn have Lossie 04-40. 617 Sqn have 41-59 and 12 Sqn have 80-99. 14 Sqn had Lossie 60-79 before they dissbanded.

Lossie 617 should be an easy one Al
Mike, Lossie 5** is always XV Sqn. I think if a Lossie 5** callsign is used, it's a Student with an Instructor in the back seat
