Odiham dump July 1983 Wessex+

Post by Treble111 » Fri Sep 09, 2022 8:31 pm

Hi FC

I have in my log book 2 Wessex and a Chinook on the dump on 25/7/83. Is this correct? I think one would have been XS871, but would be grateful for any ideas on the other two frames.

Welcome to FC Treble111. I suspect that was Greenham Common weekend?
Trusty Wrecks & Relics 9, published April 1984 says situation at Odiham 'little changed' from W&R8.
It lists
XD182 Whirlwind on dump
XN387 Whirlwind BDRT
XP333/G Whirlwind BDRT
XS871/AI Wessex HAS1 instructional use
61-2414 CH-47A arr 1/12/82 for use as instructional airframe

The Chinook did at some point become a burnt wreck dumped on south side of the runway, in the dip towards the brook, but whether it was outside from the get-go I cannot remember (I used to visit regularly from 1986ish - 1990, when Wokkas had codes and you you could actually read them)

Regards
Mark

Thanks all
My logbook just has ‘Chinook dump’. I doubt I’d have written that in for a Whirlwind though. It’s never been the easiest place to spot at.
Cheers
