Spanish Navy TAV-8S Fairford 1994

Post by Londoneye » Wed Dec 18, 2024 8:33 pm

Can anyone confirm the reg of the Spanish TAV-8S coded 01-808 Fairford 1994 ?
At the time quoted as VAE.1-1
Many pics on web quote this.
But according to a Mach-III publication it is VAE.1-2
A handful of web pics quote this too.
Who is right?
Thanks.
Pete.

The 'Scramble' show report has it as 'TAV-8S VAE1-1/01-808' of Esc 008. Can't cross-check this with the relevant details in the 'BAR' show report as the CD needed is 6,000 miles back home!

BAR has it as VAE.1-2/01-808 and has a photo to confirm the code on the fuselage. However, the aircraft had apparently had a wing swap-out at some point as it still carried 01-806. BAR state the serial was not carried externally on either Matador at the show.

No that's not what the BAR report stated from how I read it, it was the AV-8S [01-804] that had the wings from 01-806, not the TAV-8S.

None of the AV-8S/TAV-8S ever wore an external serial but as far as I'm aware the codes did not change on the aircraft since delivery apart from changing from 008-xx to 01-8xx, the suffixes always stayed the same. Ian Carroll's EAFD books list them all as below [I won't list VA.1-1 as both were w/o one pre-delivery and one in 1980]

AV-8S
VA.1-2/01-803 ex 008-3
VA.1-3/01-804 ex 008-4
VA.1-4/01-805 ex 008-5
VA.1-5/01-806 ex 008-6
VA.1-6/01-809 ex 008-9
VA.1-7/01-810 ex 008-10 [w/o 1994]
VA.1-8/01-811 ex 008-11
VA.1-9/01-812 ex 008-12
VA.1-10/01-814 ex 008-14

TAV-8S
VAE.1-1/01-807 ex 008-7
VAE.1-2/01-808 ex 008-8
