RAF NEWTON
Hi,
In the mid sixties whilst a member of the Air Training Corps at Stamford, Lincs I paid several trips to RAF Newton to carry out air experience flights in the Chipmunks of 7 Air Experience Flight/Nottingham Universities Air Squadron. On several occasions whilst awaiting flights I managed to cadge a look into one of the hangars containing a number of instructional airframes belonging to the School of Technical Training based there including a Vulcan, Canberra and various others. Can anyone please help identify the School of Technical Training based there and the various airframes situated there during this period plus any further coming and goings upto Newtons final closure.
Regards

Re: RAF NEWTON
The Vulcan was broken up in the early/mid 70s and a Hunter F.2 ended up on the fire dump. Another went on the gate (F.1 WT694)
I know the Hunter was on the dump in the 1980s as we had an ATC camp there as well. And we did a walk around the base perimeter ( I didn't have a camera on me that day) Sure enough it was there for all of us to see

Re: RAF NEWTON
Thanks STEVIEJAWS
Just to add that XM170 went to the fire dump at Swinderby, XM187 to Coningsby.
I think the Shackleton may have been on the fire dump before the Hunter F.2, but without digging up my records/files I cannot say for sure.

Re: RAF NEWTON
You just beat my edit, Steve. Yours is far more complete, but I think I might have one or two extra details to pad it out.

Re: RAF NEWTON
The Canberra would have been about 1972 after they were all replaced by Harrier (3 Sqn) and Buccaneer 16 Sqn)

Just to add a little bit to Steve's excellent listing:-
Vulcan B.1 XA908 - There could not have been very much of this at all, if anything. This was the one that crashed into Detroit, MI on 24/10/1958. See http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=55326
Canberra B(I).8 XM271/8204M - I've actually got this as being at Halton until 1981, when it went to Foulness and scrapped in April 1991.
Jet Provost T.3 XM402/8055AM - To Newton 21/11/1969, to Halton 22/02/1974 until May 1990. Now with West Walton Highway, Wisbech
Jet Provost T.3 XM404/8055BM - To Newton 21/11/1969, to Halton 25/02/1974 until April 1993. Then to Moreton-in-the-Marsh until Sept 2014 when to Bruntingthorpe and scrapped as too far gone for restoration.
Hunter F.2 WN904/7544M - s.o.c. 22/11/1957 and to 12 SoTT Melksham, then to Newton by 1959 where she stayed until 1974. To IWM Duxford until 1989 when to Waterbeach as Gate Guard. To Sywell Museum in August 2012.
Hunter F.4 WV265/7684M - Scrapped 29/01/1974.
Varsity T.1 WL637/8105M - Arrived Newton 22/10/1970 and subsequently scrapped.

Just for the record WN904 is a Hunter F.2. I cannot actually remember which F.2 was on the fire dump (anyone else remember?) I think there is only that one left as another was scrapped in the early 90s when the MoD had is crazy clearout sessions which included an early Javelin at Stafford as well.
I suppose the Health and safety brigade appeared and said nope its beyond saving....

Re: RAF NEWTON
Tim, that was a bit of finger trouble on my part. Of course it was an F.2.
The F.2 on the Fire Dump was WN901 - see my earlier post (and Day 8 of my "Those were the Days" posts). I can absolutely confirm this as I walked over the fields to it from the back road and eyeballed the serial under the wings!!!

I am now thinking the source I found made a mistake and this was XA905 , so I would scrub XA908 .

In my wild student days I used to pop up to RAF Newton, often to meet my chums flying with EMUAS.
I've extracted sections from my logbook (in excel so it doesn't copy too well) to show what I found on my visits plus when I logged the locals.
Hope you can follow it.
The only difference from earlier posts is Hunter WV265 - is this a mistake ?

Apologies for hijacking the thread. Anyone know the serial of a Lightning T4 or T5 which was being used for missile loading training in the early eighties?

Re: RAF NEWTON
As it seems to have absolutely nothing to do with RAF Newton, I would suggest that very few people would actually look at this query.
It would have been better to have started a new thread. Perhaps you could do so and may you have good luck with it!! Sorry, but I can't answer it.

Re: RAF NEWTON
The Lightning was XS451 which left Binbrook in 1975/76 for St Athan and then left for Newton.
As for its eventual fate of going to Cranfield Plymouth etc then becoming a flier with Thunder City the less said the better

Re: RAF NEWTON
Well done, Tim. A bit of digging eventually revealed that it arrived at Newton in June 1978 and departed sometime in 1988.
