My Edinburgh Phantom Mystery in 1988.
My Edinburgh Phantom Mystery in 1988.
Hi all this mystery has dogged & bugged me for many many years- I was at a fruit farm near Edinburgh Airport on Saturday 2nd July 1988, and was waiting in the car for someone to catch up with us when I looked up to see a Phantom pulling up on departure presumably after a missed approach or PD and to this day haven’t found out which Phantom it was? Obviously being a Saturday it was unusual to see this happening. Does anyone have any ideas as to a serial and whose it was please.?..........
Re: My Edinburgh Phantom Mystery in 1988.
XV590/AX Phantom FG.1 43 Sqdn was in on the 1st according to BAR so that could be it if it night stopped.
Re: My Edinburgh Phantom Mystery in 1988.
Now I never thought it had actually landed at Edinburgh rarely apart from diversions have I known Leuchars Phantoms to land at Edinburgh only missed approaches. If I had known it had landed I would gone and had a look. Cheers, one mystery solved. You don’t know what it’s callsign was by any chance?

Having recently joined this forum I was scrolling through old queries relating to Edinburgh. I can advise thanks to "Scottish Air News" that XV590 diverted in from Leuchars, landing at 1703 on 1st July 1988 call-sign I2Q42 and departed at 1052 on the 2nd call-sign P2D40.
Hope this is of use even 20 months later!
Kind regards

Interesting that on both days they were, by the look of it, QRA callsigns!
Re: My Edinburgh Phantom Mystery in 1988.
Not QRA callsigns at all, just normal alpha-numeric callsigns in the old Phantom days.
This season, I'll be mostly wearing........A THONG!
