War memorial in Badwell Ash has a plaque on it commemorating B17. 42-3544 "Stars and Stripes".
Aircraft belonged to 550 B/Sq, 385 B/Group. Crashed after takeoff from Great Ashfield airfield 5th Jan 1944 .
One survivor from crew.
Part of Great Ashfield runway still exists a couple of miles north of Elmswell , east of Bury St Edmunds.

Memorial on Vatersay (Outer Hebrides) to crew of Catalina that crashed in 1944, amazingly quite a bit of the airframe remains, (not sure if this is posted in correct thread/area?).

This Catalina was JX273 of 302FTU based at RAF Oban (seaplane base).

Thanks to all who have posted on this topic. Some very interesting information and pictures.

Note that actually it was Lancaster W4175 (not WF4175) that crashed on Coningsby gasworks on 20/03/43.

Hi,
It is in a most beautiful area yes, quite emotional when you are there in the quiet with the memorial and your thoughts. Well worth the trip if you are up that way..

Next to the main stone is a very good information board

In August I Visited South Cerney and in the church graveyard is a bench in memory of the crew of Hercules XV180 which crashed at Fairford in1969.

I also visited nearby Down Ampney Church which also has a garden of remembrance for those who served at the nearby airfield and a nice stained glass window

I hope to make some more trips around when the weather improves .
Comments and information always welcome
