JetStar at Mildenhall?
JetStar at Mildenhall?
Does anyone else remember a well preserved Lockheed JetStar parked on the Southside at RAF Mildenhall in the Early 1990's? Always attempted picture when I saw it but couldn't quite take one. Can anyone tell me how long it stayed at The Hall for and where it went/ what eventually happened to it?

Yes I recall it. Serial was 62-4198. I only seem to have recorded it once in September 1987 but must have seen it many times on passing. Scramble has it as broken up with the comment "Used for battle damage repair training Mildenhall (UK). Remains scrapped by 22jan92."
Hope someone else can offer a bit more.

hi,
From about May/ June 1987, we had C-140B 62-4198, ex 58th MAS, which was used a Battle Damage Repair Training Airframe with the 513th FMS. It was located in the aerials on the South Side of the airfield along with a T-33 (51-6769) and F-4C on h/s 30/31. It was scrapped or possibly burried on the South side of the airfield in or around January 1992. Around the same time F-4C 64-0707, ex Michigan ANG was moved over to RAFL.

I do remember visiting Mildenhall and this would have been early 1990s and seeing that they were starting to build a new ramp or even the base for new hangars. There were some well shredded Jetstar remains amongst the hardcore, so buried would be right. Maybe something for the aviation archaeologists in a couple of hundred years time. I will do further research to come up with a more accurate date.

Update to the above, the scrapping date if 22 January 1992 is also quoted in the Air Britain Biz jet production book, but Wrecks and Relics says broken up between 6 and 13 February 1992. I visited Mildenhall the following month on 11 March and I noted some Jetstar remains and they were visible in the foundations of a new ramp/hangar site. Adding to this the C-130 and T-33 had both gone by April 1993.

Cheers for that people, those dates certainly fit as it was July 1991 when I remember seeing it, just disappointed I never managed a good photo, also unfortunately never saw the Phantom or the T-33 now those would have been good!
