Photo Challenge - Autumn 2011

Post by Macc » Thu Sep 01, 2011 1:54 pm

Introduction

Introducing the new Fighter Control Season Photo Challenge

This is a new concept being introduced to present Fighter Control members with an excellent opportunity to become involved in styles of photography that you may not have attempted.

It is currently under trial, and if you have any ideas you feel may benefit the photo challenge then let a member of the staff team know.

The Tasks

Before reading the tasks, please familiarise yourself with the rules:- viewtopic.php?f=325&p=258643#p258643" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Each season you will be presented with five different categories, and you will enter one photo for each category to create your competition portfolio which will comprise of five photos.

This portfolio will then be judged by both members and staff - the judging method is currently being worked on and we will have it decided in good time before the judging begins.

The five categories are randomly selected.

Category 1 - Common aircraft types: Trainer - Tucano T.1; Fighter - F-16 (Any variant); Transport - C-17 (It has to be one of these three!)
Category 2 - Close up: Close up shot with squadron insignia
Category 3 - Specific angle: Head-on shot
Category 4 - Weather: Dramatic cloudscapes
Category 5 - Editing technique: Black & White (This photo does not have to have been taken in the season, the other four categories do.)

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to seeing how this goes down and I hope all participants enjoy it.

Macc,

Sounds a great idea. One question - can one photo be submitted to cover two categories? EG my F-16 head on is also black and white?

Cheers

Am I right in presuming Autumn started on 1st September?

Yes.

Autumn: September 1st - December 1st
Winter: December 1st - March 1st
Spring: March 1st - June 1st
Summer: June 1st - September 1st

I've amended rule 4 to make this clearer. :)

10. Each entrant will create a thread for their entries - all entries don't have to be posted at the same time.
12. You must clearly state which category each picture is entered under.
13. You are not allowed to post the same picture under multiple categories.
14. Each photograph must be posted seperately in your thread with appropriate comment on location, date and any additional comments you wish to make.

:)

Can someone confirm, that photos must have been taken not earlier than 1st September 2011 to qualify or can we use old photos?

Regards

Craig

In categories 1-4, you have to use photos taken between September 1st and December 1st.
In category 5, you may use a photo from any time.

I apologize to anyone who has had misunderstandings, but I believe that everything will become clearer soon.

Iceman, you need to make your own thread in this section - you don't post entries in this thread.

This looks like a lot of fun Macc and something that should be of benefit to the forum. Thanks for organising it, just got a couple of questions; Does the Black and White shot have to be totally desaturated or can it have a toning effect to it like Sepia? And/or can the Black and White shot include colour popping? I also wondered why all of the shots have to be from this Autumn apart from the Black and White one....

Totally de-saturated.
Craig wrote:And/or can the Black and White shot include colour popping?
I'm afraid not.

Because it's specifically an editing technique I think it would be easier to allow it to be from any time. Also, it means those who don't get out as much in the three months more chance of entering. Which is why in Winter there will be two categories with entries allowed to be photos from any time.

Hope this clears things up,

Chris

That's fair enough Chris makes sense too. I live for photography in the winter but I appreciate most people will spend more time out and about during the summer so I understand your reasoning.

With the totally de-saturated B & W image though I hope Craig and Steve who have already started their portfolios read this thread too...
