Norwegian AF Safari's MFI-15 or MFI-17 ?

Post by knutt » Wed Jul 24, 2024 7:49 pm

Does anyone know if the Norwegian Safari's are MFI-15 or MFI-17 ?????. The Scramble military database calls them MFI-17. The checklist on MSF calls them MFI-15. Which is correct.?

Many thanks
Kevin

MFI-15 is the civil version. The military version is MFI-17.

The RNoAF refer to them as MFI-15’s

It's a bit more complex than that, which is why people get confused. The MFI-15 Safari is the original version, designed for both civilian and military basic training. The MFI-17 Supporter is a later version optimised for military use, with (very?) limited capabilities for military operations.

The Yellow Sparrows operate the MFI-15 version, which is why they're referred to as 'Safaris' and not 'Supporters'. ;)

You're very welcome!

In fact, further reading has shown that it's even more complex than I thought. As well as the 25 MFI-15 Safaris that the RNoAF bought in 1981, they then bought 4 MFI-17 Supporters in 1987 (presumably to make up for attrition losses, as four of the Safaris had been written off by then). One of the new batch was s/n 844, this being one of the 'Safaris' that we saw at RIAT...! So, the simple (!) answer to the o/p's question is: 5x MFI-15 + 1x MFI-17.

I make than an aveage of MFI-15.3333! ;)
