United States Air Force, CLEAN81, Douglas KC-10A Extender just popped up on radar. F22s?
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2017 Discussion Thread
Hardly being "coy" it is..! Wind dictates runway use. Wind uncertain. Runway uncertain. Simple safety really!
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2017 Discussion Thread
I remember in early 1990s swopping viewing areas several times in one day as runway kept changing whats the problem!Ares wrote:RIAT are still being coy about what runway will be open, it'll be a late call in an email they've just sent out.

It's great news about the Flankers... at least for those people with Sat/Sun tickets. Unfortunately I could only make it on the Friday this year so for me it's obviously a little disappointing. Similarly disappointed about missing the U2 and A4.
Whilst I get that you really need to buy a Saturday ticket to guarantee seeing all the highlights (which is why it always sells out first), Friday tickets are still pretty expensive. It leaves me wondering why they've decided not to include the Su-27s in the Friday display. I can't imagine that I'm the only one who'd rather see an Su-27 than the PC-9M or C-27J.
Don't get me wrong, it's still going to be a great show on all days. I guess I'd just feel a little bit happier if I knew why the Su-27s couldn't display on the Friday... and I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation.

I would imagine because the Friday programme was set in stone long before the Ukrainians confirmed. They aren't going to go and tell a confirmed pilot that he/she is being dropped from the display because someone else is more exciting it wouldn't be fair! Just a theory, not based on any inside info.

Could be right, but I find it hard to believe that the Friday display was set in stone long before the Ukrainians confirmed and yet the Saturday display wasn't (given that these are on consecutive days). Maybe there was just more flexibility in the Saturday programme to fit in a last minute confirmation?bizfreeq wrote:I would imagine because the Friday programme was set in stone long before the Ukrainians confirmed. Certainly agree with your point that it would be a little unfair to bump one of the confirmed displays just because something more interesting came along.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2017 Discussion Thread
But you pay for a Friday ticket knowing that you're going to get a shorter display. There's never any guarantee as to what will be in that display and some people may even prefer displays such as the PC9 or Spartan. It's all down to personal preference.foxycub wrote:Could be right, but I find it hard to believe that the Friday display was set in stone long before the Ukrainians confirmed and yet the Saturday display wasn't (given that these are on consecutive days). It might still be expensive for Friday, but you're still getting a flying display featuring a number of acts that cannot be seen elsewhere in the UK.
If you want to see everything that is scheduled to fly, then your only option is to pay more, for what is a longer flying display on the Saturday or Sunday

Flexibility is built into the programme on each day, weather & serviceable being two variables.
One of my concerns relates to the Americans now that Parker has retired. How will Lady Penelope get to the show?
Have an enjoyable visit

Just wondering what the protocol is if something pulls out of the flying display at the last minute due to a technical issue. Can they replace it with something else at short notice or does it simply leave a gap in the display? Presumably there are briefings etc... that the pilots must attend on display days.
I guess some of your regular RIAT attendees must have experienced this situations at some point.

Previous experiences in regards to this have seen the next participant start theirs early, then the next etc, with a hope that somewhere down the line the broken one gets fixed and flies later.

If i remember right, ramex and pdf weren't due to fly in the display on Friday, two years ago, but still did as a valudation fir the weekend, akthough the pdf was cut short by another birdstrike! So possibly the flanker will fly friday, just not as part of the 'official ' display line upfoxycub wrote:Could be right, but I find it hard to believe that the Friday display was set in stone long before the Ukrainians confirmed and yet the Saturday display wasn't (given that these are on consecutive days). Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2017 Discussion Thread
Thinking out loud, the stuff that says on display Sat/Sun only, perhaps it would arrive tomorrow and be positioned in the Green Zone on Friday (hence not accessible that day and technically not on display). U-2, A-4 etc. Fast jets appear to be parking North East side so probably space at the extreme South West side. Also even though Su-27 display has been validated they would presumably still do a practice/reccie display. As I say, just thinking out loud for those that think they might not see the above on Friday at all. Either that or they arrive after Friday display finishes, we'll wait and see.
What a day today by the way! And tomorrow is gonna be mental!!!

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2017 Discussion Thread
Seems to be a lot of confusion about stuff that's not shown in static on Friday: as with previous years, some of the static park is not open on Friday. Thus, just because it's not listed as Fri static, doesn't mean it's not going to be at Fairford on Friday. Good example is the U-2 which arrived today (or to be fully accurate, two arrived today, with one (presumably) going home sometime soon).
