RIAT Global Hawk Query

Post by scottspencer » Sun Jul 17, 2022 5:07 am

Not sure if anyone can help. On shuttle but out of the show I noted MM62161 and a UUD RQ Global Hawk. Can anyone help at all?

MM62161 is a P180 Avanti is Italian. The Global Hawk is probably a mock up

Why would you put a mock up over there? Why not have it on display?

The pictures posted of the awards dinner seems to show a GH in the background.

Another Hawk question for people if they know?

Is there a reason why the Hawk T.2 always seems to have its canopy open when taxiing in at RIAT?

They do it quite a lot at Valley as well, it’s not just a RIAT thing. I don’t know the reason though.

I was told ages ago that the T2 doesn't have Aircon and the fans work on ram air, so when taxiing there's very little airflow.

A lot of people have said the Global Hawk is "plastic" or a "mock-up" but not sure on what basis? Why not a real one - after all we know they are being used over Ukraine and the U-2s based at Fairford are certainly operating over Ukraine?

Because the mockup has been stored at Fairford since 2012 at least, sometimes it's on static display, usually it's used as a prop for events on the Northside. It's quite often visible during RIAT when it does so.

With regards your Hawk T.2 question Red-Eye-Knight, used to see the T.2 Role Demo Aircraft in 2015 do that all the time when at Newcastle for Sunderland and at Prestwick for the Scottish International Airshow, so as POL points out it must be AIRCON reasons?

On the basis of going up to it and looking closely, plus tapping it. Definitely a replica.
