Duxford Battle Of Britian Airshow 2020 (Wishlist)

Post by thevulcan » Mon Jun 01, 2020 6:07 pm

Hello all to try, raise spirits a little and increase a bit of hope. I have created this thread for members of the community to list what they would love to see display at this years show. I have created a separate thread to keep these wishes separate from the main thread on this years show that will contain the actual updates.

Personally I would love to see Tempest II MW763 (G-TEMT) in the flying display as it has now completed restoration  . Congrats to Air Leasing.

Indeed MRTT it did its first post restoration engine Runs in February and was painted in post war silver in March/April. Believe it is based at Sywell.

Hi thevulcan

I would like to see Duxford have a go at beating its own record or setting a new record for the most amount of Spitfires airborne at the same time... I have seen 17 airborne at Duxford but to see something like 25 would be fantastic.

Also I would like to see a formation together of Lancaster... B17...Spitfire... Hurricane... P51 Mustang... P47 Thunderbolt.

I didn't know about the Tempest so I do agree with you... would be great to see this in the air and it would certainly be a first for me.

Certainly didn't know it'd progressed that quickly. :thumb:

I'd be happy if the show actually got to go ahead, with the public able to attend.

I really hope it can happen in this 80th year.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see as many Spitfires as possible tail chasing across the airfield, with the BBMF in attendance with all their 6 as well, followed by the largest formation of Hurricanes seen since the war.

I can't find anything on the web about this, has it flown?

Not to sure about weather it has flown or not in the February addition of FlyPast magazine it said it had completed engine runs. It is listed as an ongoing project here http://airleasing.co.uk/?page_id=50
This page covers the aircrafts restoration history

With respect that is not what Flypast says. It states that at the time of writing the article the engine was hopefully going to be returned shortly. It will then be fitted to the forward fuselage and the rear will also be mated.

There is no way it could have completed engine runs, it didn't have one then.

I know its fatuous observation to make, but I'd have been happier with a Typhoon 1b. That's the mark dad was a service commando/propulsion fitter on. 609 Sqn. :)

Progress is being made on this to remember all of those that served with the Hawker Typhoon and should be a fitting tribute.

Would love to see the North Weald gnat duo display again sometime. Saw those going back 5 or 6 years ago at Duxford. Fantastic display!!

I’d be happy to see anything flying publicly this year to be honest!

I was at Helitech at Duxford years ago, having a business lunch with Eurocopter.

Halfway through the lunch, some P-51s, a Spitfire and Hurricane started doing low passes down the eh way centerline.

Knowing he was beaten, the chair of the meeting asked if we’d like to pause to go and watch the aircraft.

He was left alone at the table without so much as a goodbye.

For me, not a lot beats the sound and sight of those aircraft.

With the BBMF and Reds confirmed I am pretty happy with that.

11 Spitfires so far (12 if BBMF do the Dowding formation) so hoping for a good few Hurricanes being added as well as the Ultimate Fighters display team. Would be great to get the 2 Seafires added to that list.

Gnat's would be a very welcome addition, I've not seen them since 2014 and they don't seem to display much now.

B25 and P38 from flying bulls would be great to see also as they are at Goodwood the weekend before and not booked Duxford weekend. Some helicopters would be nice. Wessex and Sea King are now flying. But I get its a BoB airshow so maybe not.

Goodwood Revival was cancelled a few weeks ago, unfortunately.

Seafire wise, neither aircraft is flying at the moment.

That's a shame on both. I have only gotten to see a Seafire twice in recent memory at Bray in Ireland in 2016 on both days, and the paint scheme was beautiful. G-BUAR I believe it was.

In light of Goodwood being cancelled (with just 4000 spectators) and also test audience events at the cricket this month can anyone honestly see the Duxford show going ahead?

I just cannot see it personally.

The two events you refer to were cancelled because of the two week delay imposed on lifting the next phase of lockdown measures. With a few weeks until Duxford, there's still nothing to suggest the show won't go ahead.

I for one am still very much hoping for the show to go ahead. I moved my May tickets to the September date to hopefully help Duxford in their hour of need.
Again when the show was first advertised we had people being very negative about its future. it was also mentioned the possibility of no refunds if the show had to be cancelled.
I would be more than happy to donate my ticket money to the Museum if this did happen to hopefully assist in their survival until next year.
remember that if we loose these places there will be no shows next year and the people who have criticized the organizers will also have no show to either go to or watch from outside.
I attended the Shuttleworth Drive in show a couple of weeks ago and personally felt the show was faultless from start to finish.
Lets all get behind Duxford and be positive for the show to be a success.
