Bit bizarre have to agree - Seeing as I was at Brands Hatch for the British GT with 3,999 others! And Silverstone F1 GP is in July too. Weird.

Easy way out rather than organise all the crowd controls etc etc. It is an open air show so no excuse for it to not go ahead

Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
I have no way of knowing if this was the reason - but some credit card companies aren't releasing ticket sale funds to event organisers in order to protect their losses in the event of uninsurable and highly likely cancellations. Unless an event's got deep reserves then that'll kill their pre-show cash flow.
Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
This procedures by credit card company isn't new it has been going on for some years now. I know of a large folk festival that was canceled for this reason four or five years ago now.
Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
Can it be that I'm the ONLY person on the Forum to appreciate this cancellation is sweet FA. to do with Covid19, Government Restrictions or even the financial risk to the Organisers. Nope! In fact (adopting Legalese text?) could this allegedly be more a case of an unsuitable venue in Terms of operating capacity, Staffing & ability to manage a public event such as the Flying Legends Show. A cursory check of the current status for Sywell to even operate as an airfield this coming week could yield unexpected results?
From companies still not being able to give 50% of their pre-Covid services at this close stage to the new normality, right through to Events cancelled/postponed due to the Covid highly convenient 'Free Get outta Jail Card' ?
On the above basis "Flying Legends 2021 at Sywell" maybe a top contender for 'Wet-fart of the Year Award'

Are you suggesting that Nick Grey in his letter is lying?

.
Pause for thought.
Open air event, say 5000 persons over 3-5 hours. Socially distanced, some with masks, etc.
Those carrying C-19 use the limited number of facilities as expected and there are the points of contact to pass on the virus.
Shuttleworth is close to Bedford. Not worth the risk, so money spent and staying in isolation. Choice made🛰

So travelling to Portugal, up to 10-12,000 fans from the UK, for a game of football is fine?

It could be that the cost of insuring the event against cancellation, as well as other hazards, has made it unviable this year. Just my thoughts - no knowledge about such problems!

Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
It gives me no pleasure to say it, but airshows in the UK have seemed to be in steady decline for at least the last 20 years, and I fear due to factors too numerous to mention they may be near the end of the line.
Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
Are the larger shows victims of Insurance premium hikes, presume if the date for the relaxation of measures moves then the premium goes up. I'm only guessing as I too find the decision to cancel before any official announcement seems very strange. Maybe it also has something to do with border controls as well as lots of people do come over from Europe.
Pure guesswork on my part but that does also seem to be what the organizers are using as well. I was so looking forward to the show at it's new location. Will just have to wait till 2022 now.

I wonder if this has anything to do with it

The government's refusal to implement an insurance scheme for mass events this year means the festival industry is looking at a "lost summer", according to a Commons report.

Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
I have just had my refund, £45 instead of £50.
When I enquired why, it is because they are "unable" to give the booking fee back, as stated in the booking conditions.
So I have paid £5 for nothing, which although of minor consequence, feels wrong.
I won't bother with Flying Legends again. I would rather stand outside to take photos

You accepted the conditions at the point of purchase - whether you read them or not is irrelevant.

Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
Why did you bother paying £50 in the first point?? Your own fault for not reading about the booking fee, which is nearly the standard at every event that charges a booking fee
Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
Have you ever organised a large outdoor event? I run a festival every summer that gets 2-3,000 punters. Right now for this year we still can't give a definite 'go/no go' decision for August, we are reaching the point of hefty finanacial outlay in order to secure services like first aid, security, event insurance, toilets, PA systems, fencing, performers and 101 other things. With the uncertainty that is creeping in about the decision for 21st june onwards at some point you are forced into that decision, Flying Legends are probably at that point. Get it wrong and the whole thing collapses for good, would you take that gamble? If it was feasible to decide now to go ahead of course they would.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
Re: **CANCELLED** New Flying Legends @ Sywell July 2021
Agreed the financial risk for the un-recoverable expenses is too great for the Flying Legends team to take.
But the only reason there is a risk in the first place is the non committed attitude of the British Government, and the Governments refusal to pay compensation if event have to be cancelled.
What angers me is that small music festival, village fetes and local carnivals are being cancelled yet the biggest risk to health such as the major sporting events are being allowed to continue.
It is as if the Government feel its is OK to oh fudge about with peoples lives and minority interest groups but they dare not risk the back lash from cancelling the likes of the European football championships.
An event the size of the Football involving 24 teams playing in eleven countries all ending up in Wembley. God help us.
