RNAS Yeovilton air day 1965 souvenir programme, Blue Angels

Post by Paul1983 » Sat Jun 07, 2025 6:20 pm

I have a habbit of picking up anything aviation related that takes my interest, Most of it is quite modern but I do have these two older pieces I thought were worth sharing! The first is a Blue angels signed souvenir air day program, and the second is a sealed Aircrew First aid kit. Ps. I was not born when this show went ahead, But I thought it was a interesting item and bought it.

Nice find. This was may first airshow, I taken by my parents and I can't remember a thing as I was one!

A trip down memory lane for me Paul. The shot of a Sea Vixen in a similar profile was the eye-catcher in the recruiting ad in Motor Sport magazine that lead me to flight in a Sea venom during my posting to RNAS Heron in the October of ‘65.

Thank you

Interesting programme. I like how all the lightweight stuff is displayed first, clearing the way for all the heavy metal. Must've been a great show, the Blue Angels performing with F-11 Tigers would have been spectacular. And finally the car drop, saw that happen once at the (Manchester) Barton show in the 1980's (think it may have been a Marina used). Then the 'sweet drop', there's a novelty I've never heard of. Sadly wouldn't happen now (H&S etc...)
Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.

The car drop continued into the early 80's. Basically there would be PA announcments throughout the day along the line of "Would the owner of Ford Escort registration XYZ123 please move their car, or it will be removed". Then late in the show a final announcment of basically "We've asked several times for the owner of Ford Escort registration XYZ123 to move their car or it would be removed, and we weren't kidding". Then the car drop :-)

There was also the "absailing gone wrong" during the jungly assault at the end. Consisted of a dummy being thrown out of the Wessex/Sea King landing with a bit of a thump in front of the tower. Only saw that once or twice - I suspect there may have been some complaints.
