If you want a Markings book, the Military Aircraft Markings ones (2010 being the latest) are probably the way to go. They get out of date reasonably quickly what with aircraft moving around between units, but it's still very useful.

MAM does issue updates on its website, although they tend to focus on the british a/c.
There are also a large number of listings available online, some more up to date than others.
Scramble from the Netherlands also produce a very good numbers book for all European air arms plus US stuff.

I use the Mach III books, you get all the aircraft of the world with just 3 titles, the british one plus these 3 have historic and out of service types as well, plus I use the MAM book in my car so I can confirm what I have seen and if ive seen it before, the MAM book is a great way to start
