F35 pilots at the mo will have 8# or 9# numeric callsigns when flying as singletons. Have sent you a PM ;-)

The F35B can carry 13326lb of internal fuel. The F35A carries 18500lb, and the F35C 19600lb. The F-16 carries 7000lb internally, or 12000lb with two wing tanks, or 14000lb with the centreline tank as well. The extra drag of carrying drop tanks is significant, so you'd rather have 13326lb internal than 14000lb total, half of which is in external tanks.

Adding 7000lb of external fuel to an aircraft capable of carrying 13300/18500/19600 internally will result in a minimal increase in range.
That said the Engine in the F35 is huge so wonder what the fuel burn rate is compared to the F16?

Picking your brains as a newby. How would you pick up that serial number info. I getting the callsigns from Talkdown / Tower etc. Otherwise it’s distance visuals whilst in circuits etc. Any help would be appreciated

I was at Lakenheath - I read it off from my photo - I must admit these days I find it easier to take a digital photo than use a pole (telescope)

Thanks for that. No simple answer other than visuals it seems?

True, I would need hell of a lens as they are about a mile away skimming trees . Lol!

Do they show up on the good old SBS box? I haven't used mine for a few years.

Two (ZM145 43C81B and ZM148 43C81E) definitely showed up on PP & ADS-B when they first flew (i.e. after the first arrivals), but nothing since that I have noticed.

This might be stating the obvious but that is the simple answer. The only guaranteed way of identifying an aircraft is for someone to actually see it and read of the serial (or registration for civilian-registered aircraft). Anything computer-based assumes the data behind the representation is correct - an assumption that many take but others choose not to accept as a "fudge". The choice is there to make - there are no laid-down rules to this hobby.

Trouble eye-balling serials? What about those Armada Harriers that turned up at Waddington decades ago; even parked up around fifty yards away I couldn't spot the b***** s/ns!
Happy days, good luck.
