It's been on the cards a few years. RAF have Benson, Odiham, AAC have Wattisham, Middle Wallop and still retain assets at Aldergrove, Navy have Culdrose and Yeovilton - so that's 6 main operating bases which are simply to many. All sorts of rumours including- Boscombe to be a new super base for two or all three of the services helicopters, all AAC assets to be concentrated at MIddle Wallop, All RAF assets to Odiiham etc.

I would imagine in the next 5 - 10 years whatever happens the 6 bases I've mentioned will become 3 and maybe less.

I'm assuming STANTA won't be closed so they'll still be using that.

Agreed Phoon, although sometimes I think that stategists can't always see the wood for the trees and focus too much on cost savings (which while prudent) isn't always perhaps the best option. As I've mentioned before, the military has pretty much (especially the RAF) pulled itself/retreated out of for example the NW of the UK comepletely, and that will see a disengagement from public and the public support for them and the wider military, which then makes it easier to cut more without concern for any public outcry.

Hopefully before the bean pusher get to carried away selling off Airfields for more executive housing estate s we don't need they might think it a good idea to have some heavy lift Helicopters in the north of the England given recent events ?
