Bank Holiday special at former RAF Metheringham...

Post by Shippo » Fri Apr 21, 2017 11:47 am

RAF Metheringham was the wartime home of the famous 106 Squadron from 1943 to the end of World War Two. Very few know of the squadron's connection with Wing Commander Guy Gibson who was its Commanding Officer at RAF Syerston before he was requested by Air Marshall Arthur (Bomber) Harris to form 617 Squadron (the Dambusters) flying from RAF Scampton.

Just think of it - 5,834 operational sorties with 59 Lancaster bombers alone which failed to return from missions what was described as to be a Middle of Nowhere aerodrome. Who could image over 1,000 airmen from the squadron were lost in action . But those RAF personnel who died flying from the squadron's Lincolnshire bases during the war years, are remembered with their names inscribed on pillars at the International Bomber Command Centre on top of Canwick Hill.

To celebrate and in memory of 106 Squadron and RAF Metheringham, volunteers from Friends of Metheringham Airfield are holding a Bank Holiday special covering Sunday, 30th April, and Monday, 1st May.

A large contingent of the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles group will be camping out on Metheringham Airfield using the backdrop of Dakota KG 651 which is based there. Already a film company has used this WW2 aircraft for a Second World War film sequence. A treat is in store for those with cameras and cam recorders for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota will be giving a flypast over the Dakota KG 651 and 101st Airborne re-enactors.

Why not take a vintage coach tour of the WW2 buildings that remain on former RAF Metheringham with the courtesy of local farmers (access allowed) who are supporting the bank holiday event.

Bring your video appliances and cameras to photograph the classic cars, military vehicles, cockpit displays and a host of wartime memorabilia. There will be wartime entertainment plus a rare WW1 display in the chancel.

So come and join us on Sunday, 30th April and Monday, 1st May 2017 for our largest annual fund raising event. Come in 40s style period dress and blend in to soak up the atmosphere.
Gates open 10.00am. All adults £6.00 : children under 16 £2.00. Tickets available on the gate entrance. There is ample parking for cars.

The Museum and Shop will be open. There are the usual entertainments to include craft stalls, 1940s exhbits, and on both days, not to mention 3 Merlin engines to be fired up creating an awesome sound for everyone just like Spitfires taking off to battle in the air the Luftwaffe.

Refreshments, tea, coffee, and cold drinks will be available each day, together on this occasion, the Gremlin Arms will be opened for a thirst quencher.
