Important Information Regarding the Families Day

Post by Steven » Sat Jul 09, 2016 8:44 pm

http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafconingsby/news ... C4E3ED481D
On Friday 22 July there will be a Families Day at RAF Coningsby. This is a chance for those of us in the military to say thank you to our families for supporting us throughout the year.

During the day there will be a flying display and we understand members of the public will be interested in seeing this. Whilst this is not a public event, we have a responsibility to members of the public to keep them safe. To do this we have had to take some measures in the local area.

Due to its location, the area known as the Mound will be closed. There will be a traffic control system in place on Dogdyke Rd and we discourage members of the public from using the Old Fen Lane and Reedham Lane areas to view the displays. Unfortunately, we will have to postpone or cancel any display flying if groups of people are observed in these areas, and this would be in none of our interests!

However, the viewing car park on Dogdyke Rd will be open for the day and we encourage members of the public to utilise this area. We want those of you who stop and watch to do so safely, so please park in this area. Your cooperation will enable the displays to continue for everyone’s enjoyment.

Also, we would like to remind everyone the use of drones near RAF Coningsby during display flying would be highly dangerous and potentially illegal.

Two people have told me a conspiracy theory of a special fly past, anyone know anything? :ninja:

Knee-jerk over reaction. The Typhoon practice must have taken place this year over 100's of people stood on the mound (myself included). We should be able to decide our own risk.

Yep everyone is being overly over cautious after the Hunter accident. So deal with it ! I'm sure the locals are.

I'm sure it may calm down eventually.

Duxford regs were duxford regs not bbmf... looking at flying legends pictures suggest they mayve tweeked the avoids etc... MAA and CAA regs are quite strict about 'aerobatic manoeuvres' over crowds hence the straight and levelish flypasts are ok... hencr the problem with the mound as the display line is south side of the main with a datum towards the intersection, so likely to be completing turns etc in that area.. they arent doing it to pee you off its all 'post shoreham' fallout sadly.. things may change I notice shuttleworth have agreed revised crowd lines with the caa fir future shows thetr..

I'm sure some have already realised the changes are post Shoreham fallout, however there will always be a minority that moans.

Lets hope the other shows can follow the Old Warden example at some point

Bizarrre double standards abound. At Duxford in May, the BBMF looked like they were displaying from the next county. With a 400mm on a crop-frame, they were just dots in the sky. Yet they pass at low level over crowds of people at various county shows, school fetes, etc. I know Families' Day isn't a public event, but that doesn't oblige the RAF to piddle on the public's chips. Rant ends.

Didn't realize the RAF were here to keep us anoraks happy.

Indeed Thunder is correct

Not that some realise this obviously, perhaps we should return to the 1950s when you probably would have spent sometime in the guardroom for sitting next to the fence.

I remember the days when you watched a certain 3 airframes at Wyton and you then had a swift and fairly immediate visit from RAFP.

Just no pleasing some is there :grr:

Well said. I think the words "Families Day" seem to be lost on some people.

Who would of thought 1 man's poor decision making has led to all this, with planes displaying way away from the crowd line.

As to closing certain roads and the mound I agree we should be able to decide our own risks, I was outside at riat on the flightpath and the signs stated that it may not be safe for you to be here but it's your own risk in doing so. I'm not moaning cause the show was great anyway just hope we get back displaying post Shoreham.

Indeed, there was no "displaying" this year, which is why it was such a great show.

Grr.

This was the 1st year for many that I have not paid and gone into riat, last year I also went in pimms enclosure which was great, didn't go in this year due to late decision to go due to weather, I drove through the night on the Friday from Nottingham but thought it was well worth it even just for the F22 dedication pass . :D
