ATIS
Re: ATIS
As I understand it, the aerodrome "crash category" is an ICAO system and relates to the largest aircraft operated from the airfield. The categories are based primarily on aircraft length. In simple terms, the larger the aircraft, the more people it is likely to have on board and the more crash-rescue resources (vehicles, fire-fighters, quantities of fire-fighting foam etc) the airfield has to have available.
Waddington's Aerodrome manual (available to download on the RAF Waddington website) states that the airfield is normally Cat 7, consistent with the size of the E-3 and RC-135 aircraft. If operations are only expected to be smaller aircraft for a period, the category can be downgraded (Cat 5 for Sentinels, Cat 3 for Shadows I think). However the manual also says that the Waddington crash category may be upgraded to Cat 8 with prior notice (presumably more fire-fighters on shift).
The Voyager and C-17 are both long enough to require Cat 8, so perhaps one of these is due in today? It shouldn't have been needed for the A400M that's just been in the circuit - this is a Cat 7 aircraft!

Re: ATIS
It's back down to 5 now, so it was either for the A400, or the Reds may have been planning to come to Waddo for a practice, it has been 8 in the past for them displaying over here.
ATIS is also now some kind of Robot voice, heard similar at Coningsby.
First noted the difference on Monday.

Re: ATIS
Yes and no at the same time. The info broadcast is basically runway in use and weather etc. That can be found using a TAF/ Metar site. Which doesn't cover the crash cat part

Also info about the crash cat levels can be found here https://www.aidu.mod.uk/aip/pdf/ad/AD-1-2.pdf
