The end of RAF flying in Yorkshire

I am guessing that with the draw down of 100 sqn. In the next few weeks that once they are gone we will be in a position where there are no active RAF sqns. operating in Yorkshire? Is that true (are there some UAS tutors at Leeming? - are these classed as RAF?!)? If so will this be the first time that there hasn’t been any RAF flying ops in the 100+ years of the RAF (& prior to that the RFC & RNAS?). If so that’s a sad situation.

This government if it had its way would scrap the RAF all together , we used to worry about Labour scraping the armed forces , but this government has gone way beyond what labour planed

I'll save you looking - it's the RAF's designated low flying area in the county of Yorkshire

this might help explain it although it's the 2018/19 edition, Annex A on page 12 has a map of the areas

It's Low Flying Area 11 which is largely east Yorkshire. I'm not exactly sure that this is what the question was about though as I assume they meant based squadrons, not anything flying over Yorkshire.

I wonder why this hobby attracts such a high proportion of the socially inept. There's more courtesy and civility on football forums than you see around military airplane related sites. I wonder how many when asked a simple question like that by someone standing right beside them at an airshow or by the fence of an airfield would feel so emboldened to say 'Google it'.

Hear, hear Harkins!

Also answering the question with civility, provides an answer to other readers who also may not know.

Well said Harkins. I've only recently returned to this hobby after a 40-year break and I have a lot of catching up to do. I've met some lovely, friendly and very helpful people face-to-face but I can't quite believe how rude and unhelpful some of the people that post on these forums are! A good rule of thumb is to only post if you have something positive to say I think....

Never thought I'd see the day when there was nt an operational RAF Sqn. based on the County. Two things my dear old Dad always used to say:-
1 Aye. We've seen the best of it and
2 that were when we 'ad an air force.
Growing up in York there were always a/c in the sky usually from Fenton or Linton. The regular graduation days attracted a/c from far and wide, which were either transiting the area or had been specially requested by the graduates. Then there were the shows at Fenton, Finningley, Leeming and Elvington. Happy days! Now I have to travel all the way to Cosford to attend an RAF display! Let's just thank our lucky stars that Leeming has become the 'go to' exercise base and the Swiss are more than happy to come every winter and use our almost empty airspace.

But F3, up until the reopening of Leeming as an Air Defence base in 1989, there hadn't been an operational RAF squadron based in Yorkshire for nearly 30 years!
