There's a lay-by on the A168 (the old bit of A1), which runs parallel with the perimeter, if I remember rightly you can stop along there as there's a couple of lay-by's and a grass verge or two, not sure what it's like for police moving you on, etc.!

If you park on the grass at the side of the road or in the suggested pull ins, you will not be there long before you get a visit. Park in Dishforth village and walk along the old track that runs along the northern end of the base onto the mentioned position.

Hi Rich, not has much as I used to. Its usually late in the day when I do because you are facing the sun until late afternoon, all was quite when I called in earlier this week on my way back from the lakes.

Hi
Stopped loads of times in those lay bys and have never been asked to move. Even seen police cars drive past and pay no notice to me so I would just give them ago.

Think you will be fine parking in the lay-byes. I have never had any problem when parked there.

Yes, drive up to the main gate, can't miss it.
Hope this helps.

If it's not too late , go to the guard room and ask for permission to photograph it from inside the camp and they usually let you in .
