BBMF Spitfire operating out of CF

Post by davski » Mon Jul 02, 2012 9:28 am

One of the BBMF's big Spittys, PS915, was operating out of RAF Church Fenton on Saturday and Sunday (30th June/July 1st), presumably for its flypasts at Elvington, Whitby and display at Saltburn. Great to see and hear. Possibly the first official RAF Spitfire 'detachment' since the early 50's!

Did a flypast on the Saturday over my home in Rothwell (south of Leeds) but I knew nothing in advance so didn't have the camera out in time. Only BBMF Spitfire I hadn't previously seen. I had hoped to see it down at Coningsby on 15 June but presume it was locked away that day...... C'est la vie.

Thanks for filling in the blank! I saw it depart for the Whitby and Elvington flypasts on Saturday, went back to the fence to see it return and it flew straight overhead and towards Ferrybridge - I assumed it was on its way back to Lincolnshire so went out for a drive only to see it scream overhead back in the direction of Fenton some 15 minutes later! Took off twice on Sunday, once in the morning and then again in the afternoon, don't think it came back after that. Quite an operation really, there were at least 2, possibly 3 BBMF supporting crew on the ground with vehicle, as well as pilot and aircraft.

After Rothwell it went across to do a flypast at Halifax I believe. Saturday was Armed Forces Day so I suspect it may have been tied up with events connected with that.
