It's the Candlelighters Charity Day at Sherburn airfield - in the past they have had BBMF flypasts etc

Thought it might have been to do with that, just thought it was strange the notam said sherburn, not sherburn aeroclub which it normally does.

2x Merlins through Fenton yesterday - not totally unusual but it would be nice if they were doing the flypast at Sherby!

I saw the Merlins also flying over sherburn yesterday, it would be nice for one of them to fly over on Saturday.

Hi Stuart/Dave,

Looked on the Sherburn Aero Club page - the Candlelighters event is listed there but doesn't give any more information. When you mentioned the BBMF flypast I looked on their website to see if they were sending anything up this weekend. Nothing listed in the 'Displays' section and the 'News' section that usually lists the flypasts and other activity hasn't been updated to show this week yet.

I was looking to go across to Sherburn for their 'Help for Heroes' event in August. Did they hold one last year? If so what was it like.

Cheers

Steve

The Help for Heroes event last year had a Spitfire Mk V flypast, it was a showery day if I remember correctly - there's usually stalls and attractions for the kids and some flying although I don't know to what extent - it used to be held at RAF Church Fenton but I was told that the organisers thought the place was 'too run down' so they relocated, hence any real interest I had in getting involved diminished I'm afraid.

Candlelighters is usually a fun day for poorly children from a local hospice - a TVR Owners Club takes the kids for rides along the old runway/test track adjacent the airfield and I believe some are also flown - I have always felt as though I'm imposing on a private event when I have been there in the past so I don't really hang around beyond any advertised flypast. They had 2 x BBMF Mk XIX Spitfires flypast a couple of years ago and the Lancaster a year or two previous to that which was very nice.

Any BBMF flypast would, I reckon, be NOTAM'd by now...

Hi Dave

Thanks for that. I'm familiar with Candlelighters. In a 'previous life' I was Race Administrator for the Leeds Marathon for 18 years (!)and they were one of the nominated charities we worked with for a number of years.

Apparently the police and air ambulance are attending along with a sea king.

Very good. Hope the weather doesn't live up to the forecast...

Noticed also on the BBMF website that there is a Spitfire flypast scheduled for Garforth on Sunday. Not sure what this is for but I believe there is some sort of WWII 'themed' event at Lotherton Hall so it may be something to do with that.

Todays BBMF Spitfire flypast is for Garforth Golf Club - can't see it happening because of the wind but fingers crossed.
