Herk 22/8

Post by Stuart Green » Thu Aug 22, 2013 7:58 am

Just had a herk through low at about 820, looked like it did a circuit, don't think he did a t & g as there is no ATC wagon parked up. First time I've seen one go through :D

Heard it but didn't see it - I assumed it was a King Air as it sounded a bit like a Tucano but not quite right (if you see my logic!), I'd never have guessed it was a Herk because it didn't sound that loud (and I live 200 yds from crash gate 7). Last Herk I saw at Fenton was one evening 3 or 4 years ago, I was driving along 'Gypsum' lane towards the village after normal operating hours and saw it in plan view at very low level - stunning, if a little scary!

It looked like it circled round and gave a wave as it left, I saw it from my home in Sherburn, normally they fly 20-30,000ft over, so to see it so low was great to see but the timing of it as well surprised me, didn't think the RAF flew that early normally.

I noticed when I drove past later in the day that they were using runway 16 which possibly would explain the lack of noise at the village end. The AD used to be open at 0800 and often, in the past, the weather recce Tucano would fly-through anytime from 0730 although these days the usual time (if at all) is anytime after 0830.
