Woodford Airport Future !! ???

Post by robin » Mon Oct 24, 2011 7:50 pm

Quote in the Sunday Times Business Section 23rd October 2011

It states JCB heir land deal on Vulcan Airfield.. Jo Bamford 33 is in exclusive negotiations for the site at Woodford, near Manchester.

It goes onto say that he plans to buy the former military airfield, and transform it with film studio and racecourse.

It also states that Mr Bamford wants to refurbish an old Vulcan, which is included in the deal, and develop a heritage centre to reflect the site's historical links with the aerospace industry. A runway will also be preserved

Sounds like JCB are doing what Eddie Stobart transport did with Carlisle.

Bit close to a very busy airfield for a racecourse you'd have thought?

They ought to do something with Woodford to create proper jobs..a racecourse won't employ a lot of people only casual "when needed" staff on race days or other events..same as Doncaster Racecourse..also sounds like JCB want to create a racecourse for their own good and attract like minded people..leave it to aviation use or industry for hundreds of jobs not just a few.

Assuming that the Vuclan to be refurbished is XM603, I think this might be a tad optimistic...The airframe is off limits these days because it's deemed to be too dangerous to go near, and I suspect it's going to end up in the same state as the Nimrod Mark 4s did from Woodford recently.

(That said, I'd be only too happy to be proven wrong!)

Sad news for a local boy who grew up on a diet of Woodford airshows in the 70s and 80s, and who still drives past the now-desolate airfield every day on his way to and from work...
