Yes DC Thomson are indeed the company behind many comics and Commando Magazines to name but a few. My mother was journalist and writer there before I came along. Used to be a very good stepping stone and training for careers in journalism not just for themselves but also for national papers etc.

My Dad worked there too years ago and I used to get the Commando magazine hot off the press!

Beano, Dandy, Our Wullie, The Broons , People's Friend Magazine , Woman's Weekly.

Interesting to note the RAF Rescue Whirlwinds there. When stationed at Leuchars my father got a 'flight' in one of them. On landing to be told it was a test flight after a significant engine issue and the pilot was surprised my Dad enjoyed sitting at the open door while he threw it around!
Funnily enough they didn't let on pre flight...

It is also worthwhile looking back at travel to this annual event. Special trains formed with usually two sets of three car DMUs from Dundee were the main mode of transport for thousands and trains from Edinburgh too. You could get a ticket for train and show. On arrival at Leuchars station you got off the train and streamed across the crossing over the track and then along the grass path at the back of some of the married quarters. Then the reverse and queues for the trains home.
We lived in Monifieth so it was a train from there to Dundee first. Travel has changed in unbelievable amount since then...
Another more or less annual visitor (I think for a few years ) was the preserved A4 Unions of South Africa Steam Locomotive owned by local Fife farmer Mr Cameron. You got onto the footplate and I got to pull the whistle as it was in steam. The rail link directly into the base from mainline has been lifted for many years although the track leading up to road is still there.
It is fantastic looking back to all of this. I just wish I had taken (or Dad) and kept photos.
Either at this one or previous or next year I remember a Canberra screaming in very low from sea end . You could see a bit of smoke from engines but no noise until it screeched past us and pulled up at other end of runway. Have loved the Canberra ever since. He was very fast and very low....ah the memories..

The A4 reference was to a class of steam locomotive, not an A-4 Skyhawk.

It's a kettle, as in the Union of South Kettle.... I was more interested in the North British diesel shunters based there.

For anyone who doesn't know

Spitfire TB252 'Lucky Nine' the gate guardian noted above now lives again and has flown post restoration.

For anyone not seen there is some first flight video footage on the Facebook page. Also first engine run footage.

https://m.facebook.com/Avspecs/videos/t ... 709716358/

Given how long it sat outside it will have been quite an extensive restoration.

Fantastic to see it fly.. :thumb:

Chris

Ps the new gate guardian army tank doesn't quite have same appeal. :( ...the Tornado almost makes up for it but the happy times there as a child meant walking past Lucky Nine...
