Leuchars viewing guide.

Post by Mike » Tue Mar 01, 2011 1:02 pm

No online viewing guides appear to exist anymore as it is now an Army base, but there is some info here, 2nd post down :- http://www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum/v ... 75&t=17735" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

With the Army now fully taken over but the Runway still active do many people still go and stand on the verge at Farmer's Field/ Railway Station end? Reading that there are still Aircraft Movements I just wondered wether spotters still stood there in hope and expectation? I still miss going to stand up there and have good memories.

Do the police stop you if you get caught taking photos on Main St to the west of the runway?

Never had an issue myself, in the end they're not in a position to stop you unless they have reasonable suspicion that you pose a threat. Advice is just be cordial and respectful with them, best way about it is to have a chat with them about what you're up to.

ImageLeuchars Spotter Guide by Keenan Carr, on Flickr

These are all the ones I've scoped out - I've gotten shots from all of them except 9, 10, 11 and 13, although I have been to them and made sure that they're doable and worthwhile exploring. Hopefully if I can find out about any movements in advance I can get to 9 and 11 and try them out for 26 Landings. 13 I'll explore whenever I head out that way and UAS are operating - the day I planned on getting shots there I was risking missing a pair of Texans departing.

Point 11 used to be one of the best, but they put a big fence up and it was gone! When the army moved in, some locals were made to feel unsafe in that area by the attentions and attitudes of the inmates of the camp, and i dont just mean us spotters being harassed.

I would say that Point 4 through 8 may attract some attention from the base during September if the usual guard at the old crash gate is anything to go by.

For more distant views, the east end of the layby on the A91 at Guardbridge gives views of the latest ASP at 111, and even further away, from Strathkinness.

And best of all, if landing is from the east, is the beach.

Out of interest, does anyone have images of aircraft from spots 7 & 8?

Great memories of standing at points 1, 2 & 3. How I miss those days. Phantoms, Tornado F.3s & Typhoons amongst others zooming over, especially Airshow Arrival Fridays. Ah they were the days much missed.

1 & 4 are from Spot 7, the rest are from Spot 8. I also managed a shot of ASP5 from Spot 7 but didn't upload as the lighting was pretty naff on it.

Arabest,

I've used points 11 and 12 recently - no issues. MPGS guys take a look, sometimes slow down but a friendly wave and they carry on. Some passing comments from the army guys on their PT runs but that's just banter xD. They've become used to spotters, I know RMP kind of had to when Highland Dagger happened and we all swarmed the fence right the way round hahaha.

The guard at the crash gate during Chameleon (I'm guessing you mean the lady with the loud voice, lol) is only concerned with people who park in front of the crash gate or on the grass verges to either side of that escape road. A few of us went round to spot 4 (ish, we were into the field) for Chameleon and even had a chat with the guard. They were pretty chilled with me. I did hear some people had issues but from what I gathered it was a case of 'they didn't exactly help themselves'.

I guess it's just a case of who the guard is the day you go up. As you all no doubt remember the RAF were good about it but this is the Army we're dealing with now a totally different Military Officer.

The RAF were maybe good in those days, but you never had SF exercises running such as Chameleon.

I think that's a question you should ask in a different thread, can we try and keep this thread on topic please? :)

Thanks.
