RAF Lossie obliged us with a tweet advising that Typhoons had to divert away from Kinloss this afternoon due to bad weather. Two Typhoons declared a PAN with squawk 7700 diverting to Coningsby due to low fuel. A third Typhoon with more fuel has gone to Stornoway as the weather at Kinloss had not improved.
One of the Typhoons possibly Fang21 ZK322.

I imagine he/she considers the alternative - ejecting into the Moray Firth - wasn’t too appealing.
And there must surely be an internal inquiry into the operational decision to send jets out on the exercise when the weather forecasts for all the normal alternates were so poor
Re: Typhoon diversions 18/8/20
I highly doubt that ejection was considered in these instances. A PAN is when an a/c declares an issue but doesn’t pose an immediate danger to crew or a/c. These are frequent and are part of the pre flight planning with alternate landing fields being discussed. Unfortunately the weather along the Moray coast deteriorated pretty quickly yesterday afternoon which ruled out Inverness, not sure why Aberdeen or Leuchars weren’t available. Why would there be an inquiry, these things happen that’s why they plan for them.
