when you fill your application in they ask about modifications do you realise that fitting a tow bar is classed as a modification and you don't notify them and have a accident they are not forced to pay out!

Maybe my experience can explain this a bit. In January 2015 I was hit from behind at a roundabout, my £1.5k Fiesta was written off, I ended up only getting £1k for it after a lot of arguing up the initial £600 offer, all time that cost the insurer, it would have been cheaper for them to give me the book value or very near to it at the start. Three of us in the car, all had whiplash. Up until the accident I thought whiplash was a con but having had it (and still suffering) I've changed my mind. My partner and daughter were both offered £2.5k immediately which they accepted. For some reason I was offered £1k, so I refused and said I'd accept the same £2.5k offered to them. The insurer argued and the argument dragged on and on. I was medically assessed and scanned at the expense of the insurance company who were refusing to pay and permanent soft tissue damage was found in my neck and shoulder, its the shoulder that still causes me problems to this day. It ended up going to court, the insurer kept asking for adjournments. I finally got to court in the summer of 2018. The other drivers insurer claimed their client wasn't actually driving, his then girlfriend was so I had no claim against them, and on top of that I'd caused the accident intentionally. I was in the passenger seat, my partner was driving. They also wanted all their legal costs awarded aginst me, £19k. The judge threw it out and had harsh words with them and their solicitor, they asked for yet another adjournment which the judge refused. I was awared £6.5k damages, costs were not given against me, my insurer then claimed their costs which were granted at £22k against the other drivers insurer. All for a rear end shunt. That's got to be paid for out of everyone else's premiums.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Friend of mine had a basic Vectra Baz1 and he was offered a set of alloy wheels free and when he spoke to Insurance company it was going to cost about £500 on top of his existing cover. He gave the wheels back.

no surprise there Condor68, people don't realise the same if you only do say 2,000/3,000mls per year they class it as not so experienced driver and charge you more, average mileage so they say is 8,000
per year and if you do more the price goes up as you are classed as more risk of accident. a friend of mine drives an Artic when he's finished his shift and goes home in his Escort he is classed as a boy racer

The wife works in an insurance approved body shop and everything is now more expensive to repair because of many recent events. Every insurance company looks at the vehicle specifications at the time of first registration and anything different is classed as a modification which will at best not be covered under your policy unless declared. Repairs will only be authorised to return your car to original specification and major modifications which are undeclared can invalidate your policy.

A friend of mine in his mid 70's, driving a 10 year old car, has just had an increase from just over £300 to just over £900.
Grimsby - don't bother going there as the road network is designed by an idiot with a traffic light fetish!

I will be 78 this year and when my auto renew came through it was £784-82 a increase of £466 from last year so i cancelled it then I got Email from the comparison site I originally insured through with 3 quotes the first one £474 /£518 and wait for it £520 with the same in insurer I cancelled never ever Auto Renew they give nothing for loyalty but put the price up the reason the 3 quotes are cheaper are because you are classed as New Business. so I am very (Confused) :thumb:

I’ve gone from £520 to £860 this month with same insurer. Cheapest on comparison sites is £680, but for basic cover ie: no personal accident cover, no legal cover, no windscreen cover, no courtesy car and an eye watering £1000 excess🥲🤬

All part of the plan to get most people off the road.
Dreading my renewal due end of March.
Update.
My insurer quote went up from £196 to £284, nearly 50%.
went onto 'web' for the comparison sites, and another company knocked it down with similar ratings to £183 though with a slightly higher excess(£250 instead of £150). Even adding on uninsured driver damage only put it up to £223 so we went with them.
Told my lot that I wasn't auto-renewing and after a bit of to-and-fro they suddenly were able to drop £51 off the quote.
They still couldn't understand that's not good enough!

Would be interested to know if any of our overseas contributors are also seeing premiums rising this fast in their countries or is this just a UK issue.

Mike.

🇺🇦 🌻 🇺🇦

Still on the general subject of insurance but House this time. After four days on various sites I found that my current company’s increase from £150 to £196 is the lowest increase available to me. Blah blah blah “increases in replacement parts, etc from helpful people over the phone”

If only the State Pension followed the same logic

this auto renew is a laugh you get punished for been loyal and if you cancel and go on a comparison site you will find your current company offering the same cover, I had a choice of three listed so instead of £784 I paid £505 £1 more than my current company quoted just for spite. the reason It's cheaper you are classed as (New business)

Got my car insurance renewal quote this week from Co-op. It'll be around £6 less next year than I'm currently paying them. A pleasant surprise considering what I'm reading in this thread.

In contrast, my wife's renewal quote from Churchill is up 25% on last year.
