On Sat 16th at Peterborough Services it was £1.59 a litre of diesel.
Yet 5 mins down the road at Sainsbury's it was £1.39.

Never buy anything from a Service Station !!

I thought Rutland still worked in gallons and pounds, shillings and pence.

Your figure give c.£6.71 a gallon - it was 70p a gallon when I was pumping it out at the Central garage in Uppingham (mid to late 70s). But I was being paid 60p an hour so with minimum wage at about £10 an hour now petrol prices haven't kept up.

Sounds about right. Using a calculator and pencil I make it around £6.58.

I used to fill my scooter for half a crown and the mini for ten bob. Something like that. That was on £2 7s 6d per week. I vaguely remember that was for 48hrs a week. 7.30-12. 12.30-5.15 and 7.30-12 on Saturday.

In 1960s it was about 10 bob per gallon if I remember correctly - converts to 50 pence per gallon in new money - and in those days it contained lead, so even better value!

The cost of a gallon of petrol increased from 4s 8d (23p) in 1960 to 6s 6d (33p) in 1969. This increase was down to fuel duty which rose from 2s 6d (1960) to 4s 6d (1969). Today a gallon of petrol costs £5.68

Happy days

Diesel is currently 156.9p/litre in Long Stratton :Wow:

No wonder I don’t use it unless forced to :grr:

In 1972, when I had my Moggie, it was 33p/gallon, with 24-fold Green Shield stamps thrown in

C24 / tm74sqn,
Don't forget, as an example, in 1960 my salary at Fairy Aviation was £2 7s 6pence - per week.

I did start a petition highlighting rip off fuel prices at motorway services, strangely it only got a few hundred signatures, we now find fuel supplies just off the motorways.
