Green Shield stamps? I remember petrol rationing in 1956. Father used to switch off the Ford-8's engine to coast down every hill. And to go to school we used to walk the mile to our nearest railway station to catch the Manchester Club train to Kendal. That was a novelty as some mornings the class 5XP or 7P loco was fresh out of 'the shops' on running in turns. It was a sad day when rationing finished and it was back to normal being taken to school in the car.
Mogas: cheapest round the southern Lakes is 129.9; within the Lakes it's around 135.9.

When i worked in Farnham at ABB around 2001 I think i remember the price going through the £1 barrier per litre so since then only a 35% increase on 20+ years - not bad for a taxed fossil fuel

Most of you will have seen the same as this but it still amazes me.In 1980 we were working near Edzell and travelled back to Carnoustie at nights. On Budget night our driver had to divert to Montrose to drop a parcel at the in laws.Half way between Brechin and Montrose was a Petrol station (cheapest in area)Budget increase on petrol was I think I PENCE per gallon .given most cars had tanks of ten gallons or less, you could save 10 pence on a full tank.It took us almost an hour to get from Brechin to Montrose.Usually 20 minute tops.Had to weave in and out of stationary cars. Why would anyone drive up to about 7 miles to a fuel station to get the fuel cheaper as the new price came in at midnight to save 10 pence and thats assuming the tank is empty??

I think one of my visits to a station in Aberdeen around 2004/2006 might make you feel lucky Mike. While working in Aberdeen rolled into usual refuelling station garage(been there 2 weeks no problem, making lots of money)filled up as usual for a bog standard Ford Transit .Wandered in to pay and got a bill for 130 quid and pennies.Handed over business fuel card and was told it was not acceptable despite sticker on till and pump saying it was.Bloke got quite annoyed when I refused to pay with my own card and got really abusive(cant say much more on that without laying open to accusations)and threatened to call Police ,As a helpful member of the public I called the police as I had done nothing wrong..When they arrived they took my card detail;s registration number and charged him with about 6 offences.Apparently he had just bought the place thought he could do what he wanted and charge accordingly.Think I was close to complaint 100.Heard later he got jailed.Cant remember the size of the tank but running to near empty it was usually only about £80 fill it at that time.

Dammam, 1978-9. Filled a Chevy Impala on empty at $5 or so total. In those days there was only one garage for the town. Mind you, the airfare was quite expensive
