Diner at various spots…

Post by raaver » Fri Apr 22, 2022 5:20 pm

Hi All.

As we are going for Riat this year, I was curious if anyone could help me out with restaurants around various fields. In Criclade, near Fairford, is the Ancient Raj still a restaurant..? They apparently had a fire in Nov 21, but I can’t find anything else about it. Facebook says they’re open. If anyone could help
With this one… appreciated…
And at Mildenhall, the Dragon house is take away these days… it was our favorite, but sitting in there is not an option anymore… anyone with a good alternative, also for Swindon area….?

I stopped at the Swindon North premier Inn recently at Blunsden - the Cold Harbour pub next door is excellent but you would need to book during RIAT.
This year I am stopping in Cirencester and, having checked it out, there looks like a good number of pubs and restaurants there.

I stay at the Inn for All Seasons near Burford, which takes me about 25 minutes to get to from the eastern end at Flyby camping Always had lovely meals there, although a bit pricey. Bit they do excellent steaks , an excellent fish menu & good ale.

For Mildenhall depends if you mean a diner or dinner. For a diner then the Angels Cafe at Mildenhall is good (and about 1 minute from Folly Road)

For Dinner the Bull at the Barton Mills roundabout is good pub food,

Mickeys is still there but base access is required to get to it.

Would be interested to know of any good Indian/Chinese in Mildenahll. Did go to the Thai once but that was ages ago (seem to remember it was good though).

Mildenhall - Kings Head on Beck Row is pleasant enough

I went there last Thursday or was it Friday? Decent pint at £3.50 and a tasty rump steak and chips for £9.95

The Riverside Hotel in Mildenhall was very nice , each time I stayed. Jude's Ferry , West row used to be lovely . Who remembers the Smoke House Inn !? Miss that place! The Red Lion, Icklingham served lovely food, sadly I think that shut a while back? There was also a nice pub/ restaurant near Fordham that served a lovely Thai Green curry, can't remember the name of it, but have a photo of it somewhere . Sorry to drone on but this post has me reminiscing of happy family trips to East Anglia 😊

Close to Mildenhall, the Walnut Tree in Worlington does well above average pub grub. Normally treat the missus to lunch there when she comes with. However, as a self confessed foodie, the Packhorse Inn in Moulton is on a different level, worth a trip and stay on its own.

I see the Chequers in Eriswell has re-opened, with a Smokehose style menu. Anyone tried it?

Judes Ferry do a decent carvery on a Sunday - basic food but a lovely garden by the canal

( A friend of mine told me we were banned in the 70/80's but I can't recall that - anyway new people have been born and are running it now!)

I went to Eriswell pub - friendly enough but I didn't eat. I have a thing about the managers friends and family lounging around the pub - but only visited once two weeks ago so maybe not as clique all the time.

The kings Head I think , in beck row, is definitely worth a visit and I will do at the next convenient time - maybe Monday evening after the Kwaytarr eagles arrive !

Yeah, it’s always a bit uneasy visiting that sort of pub, but then again, if having friends & family helps keep the place open then who am I to argue, when you think how many pubs have gone, it’s a terrible shame. The last time we visited we went to the New Inn at Hockwold, and it was the penultimate day before the then owners closed. Such a shame, these people work hard, but are just not earning a living to warrant that dedication.

We had a meal in (probably) the same pub in Mildenhall in 2007 which had a very overweight cat lurking under the tables, it was called Mister Mittens and it's belly almost dragged along the ground. :'(

I can't remember the pub's name either but I think it was on the High Street.

Here he is............................
