A few more Lightnings

Post by dennis273 » Wed Mar 09, 2022 2:42 pm

Taking a break from scanning I was looking through another box and found a few more old Lightning prints.
Getting a decent image from an old print that was taken on rubbish equipment is a bit of a challenge but I did the best I could!

Firstly, in a previous post I had an image of a 226OCU T4 taken in September 1969 that I said was probably one of the first aircraft pictures I took - how wrong was I!
This image was taken on 20th September 1965 at Coltishall's BoB display I was 11 tears old at the time and it must have been my first BoB display - the scan is from the 2" x 2" print (although I have subsequently found the original colour film neg) and was taken on a Kodak Instamatic 126!

Lightning T5 XS419 226OCU - IMHO the best 145Sqn markings ever

By 1969 I had progressed to a better camera - although not better quality by the looks of it
LightningT4 XM970 226OCU Coltishall 20th September 1969 by this time 145Sqn had lost the painted spine
Image

Lightning F1a XM173 and Lightning T4 XM994 45Sqn 226OCU Coltishall 28th October 1969 - I think this was taken from the crash gate at the North side of the runway at the Scottow end

Lightning T4 XM995 92Sqn Coltishall September 1974 Bob open day I believe

Lightning F1 XM135 226OCU I believe this was probably taken around the 1974 era too. I didn't realise at the time that it was the very aircraft that W/C Taffy Holden inadvertently took for a spin.
It is now preserved at Duxford and https://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.u ... .php?id=30 give a brief synopsis of the incident for anybody not aware of it (although I would assume that most Lightning enthusiasts know all about it :) )
Looks like it was taken from the Scottow crash gate

Excellent, some nice shots and that 92 Squadron T.4 is a rarity. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Sadly I don't think I have anything worth posting - a few pretty poor quality prints that are not worth the bother. If I do come across anything that looks half decent I will post them however :)

That first Lightning scheme is pretty spectacular, don't think I saw any in those markings unfortunately. Enjoying your Lightning pics - thanks for posting.

Brilliant quality scans, considering their age, they look good.
Cheers.

Hi Dennis :P

Awesome :Wow:

No. 3 and the last are defo taken from Scottow crash gate, one of my regular haunts back in the day

I always thought 1973 was the last of the regular ‘At Home’ days before the one-off return in 1980

Thanks for a superb post yet again :thumb:

You are probably correct Paddyboy - I am just guessing as to the date as unfortunately apart from a few of the prints having a date scribbled on the back
there is no other clue as to when they were taken - I wasn't well organised in those days!

I probably should have just said early 70s :D

Hi Dennis :P

No worries ;)

I wasn’t sure myself until I trawled through my programmes and RAF yearbooks after I’d posted

Thanks for all your awesome sets

Wow! Just picked up on this thread. Great photos. That first one of the 226 OCU /145 sqn T5 is uncommon with the dayglo orange trainer bands... there's not many shots of those.

The Lighning over the threshold key's is more likely to have been taken from the field between Crash Gate's.2 & 3.
Certainly don't remember any known as Scottow CG and most certainly NOT - CG.1 the Pair rolling for take off are from CG.1
And please DON'T come back with I don't know what I am talking about, as I was spotting from COLT - 1966 - 1970, AND I have driven that area from the inside, whilst working on there
Have just noted another Error - it was 145Squadron - NOT.45Squadron = typo as you have the other's correct
I have 135 for the Era of 66 - 70, as LEUCHARS TFF as the 3 Bases then were flying the F.1 as WATTISHAM - TFF, BINBROOK - TFF and the afore said LEUCHARS

Great pictures of an iconic RAF fighter. Brought back happy memories of my first air show visits, and later many hours spent by the old yellow gate.
Thanks!
