Its a shame that they could not get a bone to overfly flat out just as he started speaking.

We understand that this is an emotive subject however, please refrain from personal attacks on other members. Try to use your aviation knowledge to encourage and educate, not mud slinging. Fighter Control has always been a friendly forum and one where opinions and discussion are encouraged. Name calling, and jumping on the bandwagon in this respect, is not encouraged.
Please also be aware that not everyone has the same level of military or aviation knowledge. That does not make their concerns or questions any less valid. It would be a very sad day for the forum if newer members were put off posting by others more in the know. Please consider the community and all it's members when replying to posts.
Thanks and regards.

According to a tweet quoted on the BBC internet coverage, the Gaddafi that Libyan TV has reported as dead is Khamis Gadaffi, one of Mad Dog's sons.

Re: Libya Update Thread - 48 hours for Libyan Freedom ??
.Daily Mail says that a Libyan pilot flew into the Gadhafi compound in a suicide attack. Report is however unconfirmed
I think there is little doubt that this is true.
In my original post here: viewtopic.php?f=287&t=29548, The Libya February 17th website reported this incident almost straight away. Although this site is pro-revolutionary and often contains propaganda, I do believe they are getting a lot of info` from the horses mouth, so`s-to-speak. This could be why their website seems to be off-line quite a lot over the last couple of days?
Anyway to recap, the original story reported that two aircraft from the Free Libyan Air Force (a term not seen in widespread use around this period), had been tasked with a mission to attack pro-Gaddafi forces and although both pilots were under instruction to return to Benghazi, one crashed his jet onto a suspected high value target. At the time the site reported that two senior command figures, one being Gaddafi`s son, had been taken to hospital in Tripoli with severe burns and wounds. It appears that these must have proven fatal. One wonders who the other senior figure was?
As a side note the suicide pilot (Martyr) was also named immediately which makes one suspect the info` was genuine. Only time will tell.

Bit of a long shot.... but you never know. Murcia is very close to San Javier the Spanish Air Force Academy so a/c flying around that area is fairly common. Albacete/Los Llanos isn't that far away either.

So how are we justifying last nights raids
That was not enforcing a no fly zone, that was softeming up Gaddafi forces for a Rebel attack.
Dont get me wrong, I dont have a problem with it, but the air strikes are now well beyond anything in the UN resolution.

how do you know the mission profiles?? nobody outside the operation knows anything about the attacks and why they happened. so what your saying here is purely opinionated speculationbenyboy wrote:So how are we justifying last nights raidsThat was not enforcing a no fly zone, that was softeming up Gaddafi forces for a Rebel attack.

Totally agree with you... I've posted exactly the same over on the Air supremacy thread. The Coalition is treading on very dangerous ground now and as you say the original UN mandate was the protection of CIVILIANS and not to back the REBELS. From the very beginning it has gone wrong, the Coalition are there to police a "No Fly Zone" to protect the civilian population, yet for the last week they have been systematically destroying the Libyan Military forces. Even the taking out of Air defenses imo was over the top as they hadn't targeted any coalition a/c, until the moment they did they should've been left alone. However the Libyan a/c that was destroyed the other day was a just target as it clearly breached the UN mandate of a "No Fly Zone".
If the Coalition want to go down the road they seem to be taking then declare all out war on Libya and be done with it.
Re: Libya Update Thread - 48 hours for Libyan Freedom ??
Ask yourself this, If a Group of Gadhaffi supporters were cornered by armed Rebels in tanks etc etc..... do you think the coalition would take them(Rebels) out?PeteHemsley wrote:how do you know the mission profiles?? nobody outside the operation knows anything about the attacks and why they happened. so what your saying here is purely opinionated speculationbenyboy wrote:So how are we justifying last nights raidsThat was not enforcing a no fly zone, that was softeming up Gaddafi forces for a Rebel attack.

I don't think they would.
As much as I want to see the back of Gadhaffi(they should've done it properly in 86) they need to tread very carefully as they are opening themselves up for a massive backlash.

Re: Libya Update Thread - 48 hours for Libyan Freedom ??
I have to agree with you there. Considering back in the mid eighties Libya was responsible for nightclub bombings, it would appear that this operation has the capability to breed more extremists willing to unleash terror on us unwilling citizens. We didn't get a say on this operation yet it is us in the long run who will suffer.Thunder wrote:Ask yourself this, If a Group of Gadhaffi supporters were cornered by armed Rebels in tanks etc etc..... do you think the coalition would take them(Rebels) out?PeteHemsley wrote:how do you know the mission profiles?? nobody outside the operation knows anything about the attacks and why they happened. so what your saying here is purely opinionated speculationbenyboy wrote:So how are we justifying last nights raidsThat was not enforcing a no fly zone, that was softeming up Gaddafi forces for a Rebel attack.

As much as I feel for civilians being wounded and killed, Libya as a country means nothing to me, has no effect on my life other than 2% of my petrol if the figures are to be believed. It's only because of international realtime media that we hear about these things going on in far off lands..

I think this thought above by Peter should be heeded, we know nothing of what is planned, some may think they have an insight, but really it is indeed speculation, I think the UN resolution includes much more than just a 'no fly' zone so I guess we should watch this space.

If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!
