Anyone any idea what this noise was?

Post by Aircraftpaulcornwall » Wed Jun 18, 2014 7:52 pm

Hi All,
We were outside this afternoon and were mystified by 'rumbling, booming' noises in the distance to the east of here, estimated to be probably around the Falmouth area.
To all intents and purposes it sounded very similar to an onshore, heavy Naval bombardment!!
We are used to 'blasting' at the local Herniss Quarries, but this sounded nothing like it and it continued on and off for more than half an hour and it seemed to vary in direction from ENE to SE.
It was not a Thursday, so most probably nothing to do with the 'Thursday War' in the English Channel (of course I may be wrong though!!)
Any info would be much appreciated!! Many thanks --Paul :thumb:

Not sure How you would go about checking. But I did note today plymouth mill telling a civil light aircraft that the danger area's in Plymouth sound were live. And firing was taking place.
Could this have been what you heard? ??

Hi buzzer,
Thanks for that - that is very interesting - with the winds in the right direction, although its a long way away from here, perhaps that was what it was!! --Paul :thumb:

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for all of the comments - it still looks as though it may well have been the results of the live firing exercise off of Dodman Point - it just goes to show how sound can travel great distances given the right circumstances. By the way, I didn't realise till now that the 'Thursday War' is also carried out at times on other days also!

Buz41 - your observations are very relevant! - I was wondering also about Sunday!! --Paul :thumb:

I would agree, likely to be in the Plymouth danger areas off the south coast. Thursday war can be on a Wednesday as it was two weeks ago.

We do not warn about live firing exercises routinely as they are confined to specific areas at specific times as notamed. If you ask we can tell you.
