Well ZH871,

You should post at least one a week of this quality and composition. A nice photograph. :D

Lovely pic! :thumb:

I'd noticed that the atmospheric conditions this week have been perfect for very persistent trails and I only have to look a little north to see lots of crossing over the BCN VOR.

Of course I don't subscribe to any daft conspiracy theories - but isn't it the case that there's been some interesting research into contrails and cloud formation?

A study found that after they cleared the skies following 9/11 we had much improved weather in the northern hemisphere for about a week..(sorry rather off-topic!)

It was noticed back in 1980 that the busy upper air routes in the mid-west US were having an effect on the weather with more cloud cover. Only to be expected as it is man-made cirrus.

Mass bomber formations during WW2 also had an effect on the weather. WW2 bomber crews sometimes had to abort their missions due to persistent contrails over the target areas. Researchers have studied the impact that mass bomber formations had when they produced persistent contrails.
MacKenzie and his collaborators searched military and weather records and selected raids that involved more than 1,000 aircraft followed by raid-free days with similar weather. They found a raid that took place on May 11, 1944, made for the best case study.

That morning 1,444 aircraft took off from southeast England into a clear sky. The contrails from these aircraft significantly suppressed the morning temperature increase across areas with a high density of flights, the researchers found.

"This is tantalizing evidence that Second World War bombing raids can be used to help us understand processes affecting contemporary climate," MacKenzie said.

If you follow the contrail, it is only one aircraft.

The "famous" ring is down the bottom of the picture, together with what appears to be an East/West (or the other way round) overflight - possibly on UL9.
