Forest entrance

Post by The Phantom » Mon Jun 13, 2016 8:41 am

At the forest entrance, what is down there that the Americans go to?
I know you see a lot of logging trucks and things come up that road from the forest, but just wondered what the Americans have down there when they drive down that road?

I can't see any homes down there on Google Earth, there's seems to be some sort of depot/workshop down there on the left after a couple of hundred yards though.

There is a big house on the left some 1/2 mile up the road that is split to apartments.

Are we talking about the same road - the one that ends up at the back of Center Parcs?

Wangford Farm and Wangford church is on the north side of the runway near the viewing area . Forest entrance is on the south eastern side of 24 threshold on the eastern side of the A1065 . The base and viewing area is to the west of the A1065

Yes Mike the track does end up at the back of centre parcs

Yes that's the spot Mike - everyone else (except tazmin88) seems to be on about the viewing area. Just wondered as American personnel sometimes go down the lane, as do the police, so wondered what that building is on the left - if that's where they go?

I'm just curious to know where this "big house on the left some 1/2 mile up the road that is split to apartments" is that Glencoe mentions, have a look on Google Earth - there's nothing down there apart from the workshop (or whatever it is !) on the left.

So, I suppose the Americans go down there to walk their dogs etc. ?

The only forest entrance at Lakenheath I know of is at the end of runway 24 on the opposite side of the road and to the south of the landing lights. I've been mountain biking down there many times and can say there is definitely a house on the left and another few houses further up around the track.

Definitely several buildings that look more like domestic than commercial or agricultural on "bing Maps " aerial view with cars parked alongside and as shown on OS maps three or four structures . So glencoe is probably correct

in this photo viewing area is top left ,forest entrance is by the "d" of Road and the houses in question are bottom right

The property in question is marked on the OS maps as Broomhouse Farm. The 'Bing Maps are dated 2016 which would suggest that this farm has been renovated since the Google Earth maps shown and the trees have grown in the meantime. Barry G.

The copyright on Google image is dated 2016 as well, but I don't know when it was taken - as Barry says it must have been a couple of years ago as the trees have grown a fair bit as in the Bing image. It's good to see that an old ruin has been renovated and is being inhabited again. :thumb:

The image date on Google Earth is 25/7/2008. Have a look at bottom right where it gives Long and Lat, Elevation etc
