892 Depart on their last tour aboard the Ark

Thirty years ago - 6th April 1978, 892 Squadron began it’s last deployment aboard HMS Ark Royal, dispatching eight jets from Leuchars. This was also my brother and I's first time photographing at a military airfield outwith an airshow. The smell of paraffin, the songs of skylarks and the crackle of the airband hinting at an exciting visitor - I’m still hooked.

Not from that day, only had a 50mm lens back then, but other Leuchars Phantoms to follow as soon as I get time.

Just a question,were any transferred to 43/111 after the aircraft transitioned to the RAF.I have a photo of a camo F-4 coded J 111 Squadron departing Leuchars during the Airshow 1986?

All the F-4Ks came back to Leuchars after being modded to RAF standard at St Athan 111 trades in their F-4Ms so most went to them but 43 got some too.
