Wyton's future

Post by WAP » Tue Jan 19, 2010 8:43 pm

What are peoples thoughts on the use of the airfield at Wyton?

I know Marshalls moving in was a possibility but seeing as JARIC (or whatever the new title is) is moving there and a lot of building work has taken place would it be safe to assume that the airfield has a flying future?
Cheers! Jamie

There was talk of being a centre for University Air Squadrons, but we couldn't see any one traveling down from Scotland or up from the south coast just to do a couple of hours flying.

Not just JARIC moving in from Brampton but some Army people from Germany and a few establishments from down south as well and Wyton becoming a centre for Defence Intelligence. The airfield wont be affected by this move although with all the building work going on, it's a sure sign that the place is going to close :D

We should get a squadron or two of Typhoons here, shame to see that nice long bit of tarmac go to waste!

Think Cambridge's card is definatly marked to close, cant remember where i read it but it was an official source said Marshalls still had not found a home and Mildenhall was no longer an option. Would be good to have something going on there. I was thinking it would be a good home for a few sqns of JSF's if/when they are eventually entered into service as its down the road from Wittering.

Guess when the move/building is finished the runway will be need for all the Big Wig's to be flown around. Whatever happens lets hope they keep the runway open.
Cheers! Jamie
