BoB Finningley '92 - a weather wipe out!

Post by Cessna954 » Sat Jan 30, 2021 12:59 pm

The 1992 BoB Display at Finningley was billed to include the Blue Angels, so it was a must attend event at the end of the season. A mate and I travelled up from the Thames Valley on the Saturday stayed at one of the new budget hotels called a ‘Travel Lodge’.

The next day dawned very grey with thick fog, but there was hope it would soon burn off and we would get a full air display. Alas, that was not to be and all who attended will recall this particular BoB airshow for being largely a weather wipe-out for flying acts.
On with a selection of static photos taken, that will hopefully convey how grey it was (just look at the flood lights in some).

The Blue Angles packing up their gear in to their TC-130G Fat Albert having given up on the possibility of flying. If I recall correctly an F-18 did fly on a weather check, or am I just imagining that?

The scan quality is variable as I've been working my way through thousands of 35mm slides over the past 15 years and continually learning and improving on it.

Don't knock 'em Neil, they're fine scans. It was a crying shame about the weather because it was an absolute stonking line-up (certainly as good as the 91 show). I even went to the Biffa lane the day before for the arrivals and got drowned there too. heyho. :(

What scanner are you using bud?

It was a cracking line-up and despite the gloom the static shots came out ok.

I'm using a Nikon LS50 and the Vuescan software/driver. After many years of use the circuitry stopped working last year and finding a second hand one on eBay looked quite costly. Thankfully I found a site that sold parts and simply swapped over the circuit board, and it worked again.

Another 5 years and I may have scanned them all, and then sell the Nikon for more than I paid for it originally! Or keep it and re-scan many of the early scans.

The blue angels gave a very good but rather flat display due to the low cloud .....thanks for sharing the pics...

Is that not the BA F/A-18B taxing in under the wing of Fat Albert in the first pic?

Another great selection from days sadly gone ☹️

drove up from London area early Saturday, had been to Finningley BoB's a few times before so knew the best way in avoiding traffic !

as everyone has said was a great show again, i recall the BA's flying late afternoon, we were by that great fish & chip shop
next to the NAFFI supermarket on the road to the front gate,

as you can see from the crowds in the background the weather did not stop the great British public turning out in force

was this the last show or was it one more ??

Hi Neil :P

Some cracking pics there

We spent most of the day tucked up in our VW T2

Portuguese SLUFFs and Northrops were the stars of that static line-up for me ;)

Thanks for posting :thumb:

Yep, remember the day, but at least the BA managed their slot well.

Good stuff, I remember I went to Leuchars that day and was on my way back to King's Cross on the train and managed to see the Blue Angels displaying low through the murk from the train :thumb:

I used a Dimage Scan Dual 3 for about twelve years until it croaked about four years ago. And then last Summer I invested in a Plustec 8200i (to stop me going stair-crazy during the lock down), although I wasn't blown away by the Silverscan software that came with it. Like yourself I switched over to Vuescan, I've never looked back. :thumb:

Would have loved to attend a Finningley Airshow unfortunately it was always the same day as Leuchars so being a Scot had to attend Leuchars.

These are all excellent given the murky conditions. Quite the worst Finningley weather wise apart from the total peasouper of 1980 where I took just half a doz pics of the static and gave up completely on the flying where the only things visible were the shadowy outline of the Vulcan on its low pass and the reheat on the Tornado!

I recall an Air France Concorde wanting to depart just as the Blue Angels commentary team had set up in the middle of the taxiway ahead of lt. I believe there was a short debate about who had priority, needless to say, USA first, France second.

Yes, this, sadly, was the Concorde that eventually crashed I believe.
