Clone the HDD to an SSD, and - "in time" - that will fall to a couple of minutes or probably less :P

All our "old " m/c's boot to the desktop in less than 2 mins (MAX!).

My laptop got this update yesterday and it only took about 3 or 4 minutes to shut down yesterday evening while it prepared the update, fired it up this morning and it took about the same length of time to install. One of the quickest updates yet.
I feel your pain Baz, hopefully you can get to the bottom of the issue and get it sorted quickly. :)

pleased to hear it worked ok for you Mike, the weird thing is I had this problem all yesterday even a restart took for ever so today I sat down in front of the wretched thing with a cuppa to pass the time while it booted up and low and behold no problem at all, even when shutting it down it was still running and had to hold the start button in to stop it or I would have fell asleep waiting. :S

just checked updates, and now its saying feature update Windows 10 version 1909.
your'e currently running a version of windows that's nearing the end of service, we recommend you update to the most recent version to get the latest features and security improvements.
I would have thought that would have updated its self as normal?

I think you have to upgrade to the next version in line before jumping to the latest (2004), which is a pain! Hope you guys all get it sorted.

Still basically totally fine with Windows Update (when run from an SSD!) - but the lowest spec PC here (a circa 2012 nettop with a very low power AMD "E" series dual core processor, but an SSD!) got the updates this morning. Everything worked until I got a message that some updates could not installed and then it rolled those back to the previous installation! Tried again - same result! Each "update" process took about 2hrs from start to finish.

OTOH, one update DID install successfully at the first attempt!

So then I investigated further by separately checking out each failed update (not difficult, but time-consuming!) - turned out that 5 (out of the 6 listed) were NOT applicable to this little m/c! So, my "beef" was/is that W Update should not try to install updates that don't apply to a particular m/c!

PS: I should probably add that all the m/c's (except one - which is not that nettop - on which I write this post) are connected to the router by cabled Gb Ethernet - and that probably helps, but the sole Wifi-connected unit doesn't seem to be that much slower to update.

not impressed with this version just when you get used to one OS the whole lot changes and you have to start all over again, I hate change, all favourites down the R/H side instead of favourites bar at the top etc
