I believe a current thought/plan is for 'key components' to be removed and the frame to be ultimately placed at the Newark Air Museum.

In response to comments here and on other fora the trustees of Newark Air Museum can confirm that they are in negotiations over the possible acquisition of a Nimrod R1 airframe.
If, and when further details are agreed any official news updates will be posted here on the museum website first!

Apparently neither are currently airworthy though - not sure what the issues are.

64 has been successful in the mechanical aspects of the airborne checks after the extensive maintenance. The rear mission kit testing continues, alongside airborne calibration checks. This aircraft, alongside 49 will continue to serve until the out of service date.
The decision for the 135 replacement? - way outside of my payscale...

I would be very surprised to see the RC-135 in full RAF service, wether we can 'rent space' on USAF aircraft might an option ?PR9 wrote:Any news on the RC-135s we are getting to replace/supplement the 'Rods?
I have made the point before that could the really important R1 systems not be fitted into a reworked (spare ?) E-3.
Dont think the MOD have the budget for another new type.
