Wattisham 11/06/20 - Rotor wash

Post by Tim Holden » Fri Jun 12, 2020 10:59 am

First time out with the camera since the global craziness kicked off. Just a few hours at the local. Brilliant sunshine for the first 5 minutes then normal Wattisham weather kicked in. Good for moody skies and rotor vortices.

Hi Tim, long time no see. Wattisham with the AH looks completely different in various conditions. Looks like the angles were good so we just have to hope for better conditions in the evenings. The last REME airtest (the one without the stores fitted) that I shot a few weeks ago was actually shooting approaches to the North side taxiway, directly over gate 2.

Hi Gary. They have cut back the hedge near the fence at gate 2. You can walk quite a way along the fence line to get side on at the HALS. Only one Apache came to play on the north side. Alas he messed around opposite the old radar site and did not bother gate 2. The guy with the stores was using a new callsign "award" that I had not heard before. He eyeballed me and did at least do a few manoeuvres for the camera.

Hi again Tim.

Yeah, I've looked down the gap between the fence and the bushes at either direction from gate 2. I've never really tried to walk very far down there as you're kind of trapped up against the fence and I still don't really like drawing too much attention when outside Wattisham with camera and scanner - they're not used too it and although I've personally never had any real problems with security there, I know a few others have so I try and keep my visits low key.

i don't know what 'Award 0**' is, but I heard it the other night and saw it on at least two tracks on ADS-B. It doesn't fit in with their normal patterns. Good if you got one guy to react to you, quite a few years ago it used to be quite common but that was when it was busier and a few more people used to visit. I've got one guy behind a AH stick at Wattrisham who is taking pics from me so maybe word is getting around again, be nice if it was. Probably just in time for me to be recalled back to work!
