Buzz off RAF low flyers hit by flack

Interesting article in the Times newspaper today. I think it's a fair report but as always low level training has to be done somewhere. It's impossible for trainee pilots to get a true feel for low flying in a simulator.I
What do you guys think ?

I don't think anyone in the news story that's circulating today is disagreeing with the need for low level flying training. But as with most things most people do, the RAF appears need to consider where it does it, when, and how often a bit more.

On the same sort of subject, is it worth a trip to the loop these days, been loads of times in the past but with the Tornados now grounded and I believe Typhoon still not transiting through LF7. Its always good for C130's not seen an A400 or any Apaches or Chinooks as yet.

Its always pot luck, I understand that, just asking really if its worth the 350 mile round trip for me from anyone in the loops vicinity if there's decent activity these days other than Hawks

Remember the days gone by in Lincolnshire with aerial spraying aircraft & helicopters flying a couple of feet off the deck. Now that's what you call low level flying you got the usual complaints from some residents, but most people enjoyed watching them weave in & out of a field.

I haven’t been for a few years now, it was getting quieter even then.

It can still be fun if the Americans turn up, but as ever seems to be pot luck if you’ll see a section of traffic.

I’m getting more joy with the Lake District these days, but the reality is that low flying is not as frequent as it used to be.

I probably wouldn’t do a 350 mile round trip unless I was in the area for other reasons too.

Saw 2 F35s low over the Brecon Beacons last week for the first time in LFA7, and 2 extremely low Pumas. First frontliners through the valley in months. F35 like Typhoon are not allowed through the Loop at the moment just like foreign visitors to the UK.

The noise issue with Texan is not so much about low level flying but the training they do at medium altitude where the constant buzzing by an unseen aircraft is causing irritation to those below.

Aww poor baby's I remember when OTA Fox was full of F3s dogfighting with Phantoms, Harriers & Jaguars, making a beautiful racket!

It can still be good, obviously any inkling of gen can make a difference. Last week saw ospreys doing the loop on theee recurring days.

When I stay in the area I always make a point of saying we are here because of the Mach Loop. It has to add to the local economy whether the locals like it or not. The Cross Foxes was closed for years, and you can’t tell me it didn’t re-open based on a lot of aviation enthusiasts staying there. If someone has lived in the area for years, and it’s got worse, then yes they have a legitimate cause for complaint. But it’s all those that move into these areas and then complain that should be ignored. If I bought a house next to Heathrow, or the East Coast mainline, then I must expect noise, and the house price would already reflect that. Finally the whole bit about it affecting house prices around the area is total tosh. The lack of decent jobs and opportunities is the main contribution to house prices in that part of Wales, with tourism being a thankful bonus. Therefore rather than campaigning to ban low flying if I was the local MP I would be saying all aviation enthusiasts are welcome to see the wonderful Mach Loop, and while you are here have you seen the beautiful Aberdovey beach etc

I am, and have been an aircraft enthusiast for many, many years, and still am. HOWEVER I can assure you that having a couple of Apaches flying circles at 250ft for half an hour over my bungalow in the countryside at 11.30 until midnight can be more than a little tedious! 'Cos I don't like it doesn't make me a 'Snowflake' however!!!. I, of course, fully appreciate that it is necessary. It's just that, at the time, I wish it was somewhere else!!!!!.

Unfortunately this isn't the case, a few years back somebody moved into a house near to a race track (Thruxton possibly?), and they managed to get activity reduced as they didn't like the noise. The track had been there for 50 years prior to them moving in!

It wasn't the racing that caused the trouble for him. It was probably us Skydivers going off in the 'Brown Bomber, sometimes called the Flying T.rd'' Dragon Rapide at Oh god o'clock. Happy days!!. Thruxton was disused as a racing circuit for quite a few years IIRC

I would be careful what I wish for in that area. That person would celebrate the closing of Thruxton for about one day before realising your about to get about 5000 new neighbours on the site instead (Talking humans but could easily be pigs) or worse, a brand new prison to live next to. Might be nice and quiet but I suspect it wont do the old house price much good!

Despite it being more quiet, I would still go if I were you Chris. Worse case scenario is your sitting on top of a hill looking out at some of the finest scenery this fine country has to offer, and if your lucky, having Lakenheath,s finest slipping by your nose at 500 knots, being extra loud just to annoy the neighbours!
