Forrestal jets at Lossiemouth, 1981

Post by daggerfan » Thu Aug 13, 2020 6:56 pm

Some jets off the USS Forrestal were at Lossie for a few days in August, 1981. In total there were five A-7s, two A-6s, an EA-6B and an S-3. The other jets departed for the ship the day before these pics were taken.

Another great set of Lossie at its best. Was down south in those days and sadly missed these beauties.

Very nice indeed

Reminds me of a day at Mildenhall , 22-4-1978 , nothing happening on a Saturday afternoon ready to go home when 2 dots appear on approach followed by another and another 2 x A-7E ( VA-81 and VA-83)1 EA-6B (VAQ-130)and an E-2B (VAW-116) all CVW-17 from USS Forrestal as welldiverting in for fuel on their way north , only on the deck for about an hour then departed , will post some pics if interested :S

Thanks for posting

Cheers

Thanks for all your comments guys.

Paul, I would very much like to see your pics. I remember at least two occasions when Lossie had a detachment of two A-7s, one E-2 and one EA-6B.

I also remember a wonderful day on 10-9-78 (a Sunday!) when Lossie got five A-6s, three A-7s, four F-4s, two E-2s, two S-3s and one EA-6B diverting in off a fogbound Forrestal! Alas I must have been between cameras at the time because I have no pics at all. That was a good weekend because I saw three USMC AV-8As the day before, though I believe they actually arrived on the Friday. Happy days!

Whats not to like, Lossie at it's finest once again, best RAF Station for movements back in the day no question in my opinion.
Cheers.

Great shots - especially the last one of the flyby! Agree with others - the full colour jets were something else!

Lucky git!. I was posted to Lossie in the late 70's and one Sunday evening in 77 or 78 there was a storm blowing out at sea, and we had a shedload of US Navy aircraft land. My mate in VASS told me they were incoming and I was out helping with the marshaling. A7's, Intruders, and others stuff, but the pick of the crop was 4 Phantoms. Got up the next morning, camera in hand and headed to what I think is now 6 Sqns pan, and most of them were gone, including the Phantoms. I was gutted. I did get some nice US Navy stuff over the years I spent at Lossie, but those 4 Phantoms are my No1 "The ones that got away".
No one gets out of life alive.
