I remember back in the late 90’s , there was a detachment of B1 & B52 at Fairford. On the last Friday before departure they held a “Community Relations” event. It was only advertised locally and was for the local residents. It was meant as a thank you for putting up with all the noise etc. Although meant for people close to the base anyone was welcome. I thlnk the event took place from 4.00pm until 6.00pm. You parked in the bomb dump and walked across the road onto the base. They had positioned a B1 & B52 together for inspection by the visitors. No cones or taped off areas, just please don’t touch! Both aircraft had their bomb bays open and had access platforms beside the cockpit windows. Plenty of aircrew about to answer questions , all in all a very relaxed atmosphere. When you returned to collect your car they had set up a trade stall for both squadrons memorabilia in the bomb dump. They also had an airshow type burger stall running there. Would be nice if they did something similar these days but I suppose security is now much stricter.

I don’t remember that one, but did go to others for us local spotter groups and as you say could wonder around aircraft and buy stuff from the squadron. Unfortunately those times went along time ago which is a real shame.

I've seen some of the B-1 ground crew stop by the Dunfield fence line with 3 of their circular, OCP patches for sale.
