  New ruling for 2022 races. [Predictable!!!] When under the safety car, ALL lapped cars must now unlap themselves before racing can resume. Well, there's a surprise, and an admission that they got it wrong last year!. Better luck this year, Lewis. It's nearly Friday folks!!!

It's a daft rule anyway - why should lapped cars be allowed to unlap themselves?

There might be a good reason for it so perhaps someone can explain why?

I've always wondered that too, if you are lapped, you're lapped, surely? :S
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

Not a new rule, nor an admission "they got it wrong". The rule before was that any could overtake.

The reason for the unlapping is that for after a SC, lapped cars would have to be blue flagged and "Get out of the way" at restart, which as you could imagine would be hectic.

Because under a full safety car the pack is bunched up so you could potentially have a lot of very fast front runners sitting directly behind slower lapped cars, gets them out of the way effectively. It's what gave Max the win in Abu Dhabi, they were a buffer for Lewis. had the rules been followed and all lapped cars had been allowed to pass by then they never would have had a racing lap at the end and Lewis would have won.

But that happens under normal conditions and the lapped cars are blue flagged so they could also be blue flagged after a restart from a safety, otherwise the leader gets a clear track that they won't have had before the safety as the lapped cars were always going to be there.

Makes some sort of sense to unlap between the pole positions as you could make a case the top three have earned that? But wasting time to unlap everyone is very frustrating to watch.

It seems artificial to let cars unlap themselves - they are lapped. It puts the guy last ( say in 7th for example) on the current lap under pressure from someone who is now unlapped and right behind them

Yes, but there would be a greater risk of an accident straight after a restart when the whole pack is bunched, then as soon as they safety car comes in and its racing - the lapped cars have to get out the way whilst quicker cars are trying to get through, greater chance to crash, and another SC.

Whereas on a "live" circuit they can get out the way easier and safer.

Must be some serious sulking going on in the red bull garage. But tomorrow is another day. And then we'll see if these new designs have succeeded in what was asked. They've certainly slowed Mercedes, so that's one thing they wanted accomplished!

Ferrari have looked good in testing, so no surprise they had a good result today. The more teams competing the better after the Mercedes snore fest of the previous few years (apart from last seasons epic of course).

Talking of Mercedes, poor Tutu must be having a meltdown with Scamilton only making fifth and Lord Russell a paltry ninth.

Well done Bottas too, looking good in the Alfa.

Hopefully a good race tomorrow.
