December what a month!

Post by Ross Forsyth » Thu Jan 05, 2023 8:11 pm

Well last month was simply fantastic for me on a personal level when out doing wildlife photography.
Not sure how long my luck will hold out but throughout the month I had countless encounters with the local otters, foxes, kingfishers and some visiting waxwings!

4/Kingfishers have been a lot more approachable the last month with the colder weather

7/2 Seperate Otter families are on the local river with 1 young cub seeming to have been kicked out by the mother in 1 of the families, hopefully it survives,in the meantime the Kingfishers like to follow the Otters around picking off any small fish which try to flee while they are in a hunting frenzy

11/Waxwings arrived at the start of the month but not in the hoped for big numbers

14/Our young cub on his own, feeding and hunting quite well but its gonna be tough for him to make it through winter on his own

Thanks for looking

Great shots Ross. The first Fox pic is a real cracker. Where were they taken, Scotland?

Cheers Ross. I spent Christmas and New year in Dunfermline and wondered if the shots were taken in the area. I managed to get a walk in around Townhill Loch a few times but wasn't lucky enough to see a Waxwing, I've yet to see them in my part of Norfolk.

Just wow! The opportunity for such photos is fantastic, but to get that quality too, in my mind, is just awesome. Waxwing seem to be even rarer those days. They were in Bury St Edmunds and Norwich a few years back but I guess it depends on the supply of food.

Cheers Nighthawke, reference the Waxwings think you have plenty time for them to make a good appearance down south, from what I`d read elsewhere there looked like being a good invasion this year but then a northerly wind seemed to push them further south into Europe rather than nice Easterly to encourage them to make the trip over the North Sea!
Hopefully the birds that were all over Yorkshire will work their way down to Norfolk for you

Superb shots Ross, every one a winner, but the standout ones for me are the first pic of the foxes, and the otter cub relaxing in the snow.

I counted 35 waxwings in a neighbour's tree across the road one day a couple of weeks ago, with 22 the following day, and just a handful in our garden. The last time I saw any in our immediate neighbourhood before that must have been 10 or 11 years ago.

Superb shots, the first one of the Foxes is an excellent photograph, but all are a joy to see.

If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!
